Are animals psychic ?

As an animal lover, I have always been interested in stories about dogs and other critters sensing the spirit world, and displaying psychic ability. We have all heard, perhaps even witnessed, when an animal refuses to go into a room, acts erratically or even playfully for some unseen entity. If the place is reputed to be haunted, it seems to drive the point home. However, we might want to take a closer look. I will not claim that animals do not sense the spirit world. I would not be shocked if they did. Animals are more in tune with the natural world than humans are, and have fewer distractions in their world than we do. They can hear things at frequencies we cannot, and sense changes in the earth, such as a tremor, far before the earthquake is known to humans. It would stand to reason that if there is a ghost in the house, that they would be the first to notice it. My aunt’s Yorkshire Terrier, when they lived in her infamous haunted house, was everyone’s first warning to a ghostly event. Given the activity in that house, it’s no wonder that poor dog was insane.

Before we blame these things on ghosts, however, we should consider some other factors. As I’ve mentioned, animals have the uncanny ability to sense earthquakes. When I was a teenager living in California, I recall my pet rat running on his wheel during the day, which was uncommon for him, and trying desperately to get out of his cage. Later that day, on the way to the mall, a swarm of bees just surrounded the car while we were on the freeway. The 6.4 earthquake hit while I was shopping about a half hour later. Research has shown that animals sense the earthquakes before we do simply because the earth is already throwing off little tremors that they are sensitive to. Animals are also known to be sensitive to higher level electromagnetic fields.

The electromagnetic field, or EMF, while a good measure of spiritual activity, also has the ability to fool the ghost hunter. You will get a higher EMF reading near electrical outlets and fuse boxes, to name just a few examples. Some humans are sensitive to these too, and they produce a sense of being watched, headaches, and a generalized feeling of dread. Animals are no different. When a dog is barking at nothing, it would be worth your while to look into this before making the assumption that they are barking at a phantom.

Animals, particularly dogs, have a sense of smell that goes beyond what we can even imagine. They can smell one part urine in 100 parts water. If you are cooking a stew, they don’t smell a generalized stew scent. They can individually smell every ingredient. They hear on frequencies that we have no way of hearing as well.

For example, my dogs can hear any number of cars park in front of the house, but they only get excited when they hear my husband’s car. Sure, I can tell certain engines apart without seeing the car, but not before they turn the corner onto our street. The only engine I know of in this neighbourhood that humans can hear a mile away is the one in our Lotus Elise, and I am not counting that.

Animals live on a different level than we do. We can probably be safe in the assumption that they are seeing a ghost if we have evidence that a ghost exists in that space. If we know anything about the ghost and its attitude toward animals, we might be able to identify the spirit based on the animal’s reaction to it. However, before we make those assumptions, it is important to note all the other factors that come into play when dealing with the incredible senses of an animal.
