Outwitted by a small, black cat called Elsa.

    By Waspie_Dwarf

I have a small, black cat named Elsa. She is good company, generally very quiet and very well natured (although not always so well behaved). We are, however, in a battle of wits over a chair, and I think I am losing. A few weeks ago a relative of mine moved and had more chairs than was strictly necessary for her smaller flat. The chairs are much newer than the ones I had and so she gave them to me. That is where the battle started. Initially Elsa was happy to claim a chair of her

O Lord that I may see (Our dignity as sons and daughters)

O Lord that I may see (Our dignity as sons and daughters) “Jesus’ love goes before us, his look anticipates our needs. He can see beyond appearances, beyond sin, beyond failures and unworthiness. He sees beyond our rank in society. He sees beyond this, to our dignity as sons and daughters, a dignity at times sullied by sin, but one which endures in the depth of our soul. He came precisely to seek out all those who feel unworthy of God, unworthy of others.”---Pope Francis

Will joyfully give them selves over

Will joyfully give them selves over "Only in Christ can men and women find answers to the ultimate questions that trouble them. Only in Christ can they fully understand their dignity as persons created and loved by God. Jesus Christ is "the only Son from the Father…full of grace and truth."—John Paul II. World Youth Day, 1993. Denver, Colorado. John Paul II had a deep love and respect for everyone. He knew that hidden in each person that he met was the reality of Jesus Christ. Thou

Professor Schmaltzenberger's Equation - Chapter Three

Professor Schtzenberger waited patiently for Dr. Reinhold to come on the line. Finally a voice on the other end said, “Hello?” The Professor hesitated a moment. “Is this Dr. Reinhold?” The voice on the other end said, “Yes.” “This is Professor Schmaltzenberger. I hope you remember me.” “Ah yes, Professor, of course I remember you. How are you?” “I’m fine, Dr. Reinhold. Listen, I have something very important to speak to you about, but not on the phone. I must see you in person, it’s very ur

Unsolved Durham Triple Murder Boone NC 1972

Here is a magazine article that was kindly shared with me by another member. It was published a few months after the murders and has a lot of information not found anywhere else. Idk if it is due to creative journalism coupled by total embellishments, or if the writer was just more determined to dig for facts.. Perhaps a combination of both. You decide. I am not sure why the pages are showing up in the attachments section out of order. I was able to encode them in the correct order into this p

How Quickly They Forget

Below is a link to the November 9th, 1973 the "Ridgerunner Voice of the students" newspaper. The headline reads "14 UNSOLVED MURDERS IN WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA" http://newspapers.digitalnc.org/lccn/2014236910/1973-11-09/ed-1/seq-1/#index=0&rows=20&proxtext=14+unsolved+murders+&searchType=basic&sequence=0&words=14+Murders+Unsolved&page=1 It seems to me that every time a tragedy happens everyone says "This just doesn't happen here!" Well... yeah it does.. Below is

Writing prisoners is life changing

Writing prisoners is life changing I am amazed at how writing prisoners has changed me. Perhaps it is because they know on a very deep level the tragedies of life. Maybe not all, but those who take responsibility for their wrong doing seem to open up a door that can lead to deep conversion. Often being in prison, things can become very black and white. It can also make one aware of how important our small everyday choices can be. In dealing with others in an enclosed environment the in

Home Achieved

Home Achieved Chaos with its many hues can paint the ‘real’ world in like form, yet beneath it all, hidden in that inner cold, a warmth resides that finds its way, forming a center where we can be still and watch and learn as the parade passes by. Being human is not an easy ride, to become ever more human; for Christ does show the way, For pilgrims you see never find rest, until the road is fully journeyed and home achieved.

Inner division

Inner division Freedom consists not in doing what we like, but in having the right to do what we ought.--Pope John Paul II In order for freewill to be possible, there has to be the possibility of going in more than one direction. In conflict our choices are very important, because it is then that we choose and do not act without thinking. The deeper the struggle, when a choice is made, that freedom comes from a deep place. We create ourselves with our choices, it is grace that

Who am I?

Who am I? Am I just another person here on Earth? Am I just another person here to watch the world screw me over day after day? No. I'm someone who wants to get something done. Who's seen a lot in her life. I'm a senior this year in high school. I have a lot coming my way, even though there's a lot I've screwed up. I am one of those people that hang out with the group of friends that probably aren't the best... But they're clean of drugs. They're clean of alcohol. Only thing to them is the

The Object - The Adventures of Zarkor and Zerak

This story is about Zarkor trying to remake the old Earth film noir detective movie, “The Maltese Falcon”, starring Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade, private detective, Mary Astor, Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, Elisha Cook, Jr… I know it may be confusing to read, but this is because Zarkor is confused himself because he doesn’t understand humans very well. I think it’s pretty funny in a complicated way. So here’s the story. Zarkor is busy in his study of their Lightship concentrating on a stack

Love God, walk in humility

Love God, walk in humility If one has the answers to all the questions - that is the proof that God is not with him. It means that he is a false prophet using religion for himself. The great leaders of the people of God, like Moses, have always left room for doubt. You must leave room for the Lord, not for our certainties; we must be humble.---Pope Francis In our faith, we must always seek to understand more deeply what Jesus taught, said, and how he treated others. If Christ is truly in

Enlightment

Enlightenment All people who are on a spiritual path need to work together and not against each other. While it is true that not all paths seek the same thing, yet the deeper you go in seeking understanding, the closer we seem to get. I am a Christian; Jesus is the Word become flesh, a special revelation of the Father for mankind. The Word is God, and I guess if there is one word that may sum up God’s Word to us, is “BE”. Perhaps if another Word is needed it could be “LOVE”. Both I bel

Cistercian Spirituality, Talk on Conversion of Manners

Cistercian Spirituality Talk on Conversion of Manners This weekend we are having a retreat titled: “Cistercian Spirituality”. This is one of our more popular retreats and the house is always full. I am giving a talk this evening on “Conversion of Manners”. When taking Solemn Vows this is one of the vows that we make in the presence of the Abbot and Community. For me it is the most important vow, for how we live out our conversion will bear fruit in how we express our living the other

The nature is mercy? (Dealing with those in need who come to the retreat house)

The nature is mercy? (Dealing with those in need who come to the retreat house) I have never met another human being who does not understand mercy when it comes into their own lives. They know when they receive it and are grateful. Mercy is something bestowed on another who has no right to expect it. We can ask for mercy and only wait to see if it will be given. We can be merciful in more than one way. Towards those we know, as well how we show and bestow it on those who come fo

Where is Christ?

Where is Christ? On refugees "Our world is facing a refugee crisis of a magnitude not seen since the Second World War. This presents us with great challenges and many hard decisions. On this continent, too, thousands of persons are led to travel north in search of a better life for themselves and for their loved ones, in search of greater opportunities. Is this not what we want for our own children? We must not be taken aback by their numbers, but rather view them as persons, seeing their

The Good Heart

The Good Heart This week one of the retreatants asked me to explain what the pictures showing the ‘Heart of Jesus’ stood for. I told her that it represented the love of God presented in a way that we can begin to comprehend. A symbol of transformed humanity, the call to become fully human as Christ Jesus was. The ‘fire’ coming from the Heart, and the thorns surrounding it, represent the intensity and the suffering of Christ Jesus. Pope Francis I believe is trying to show to the world th

The Undead Viking

Since the release of The Walking Dead, there has been an explosion of media involving zombies. We are talking about books, movies, video games, comics and even reality shows. Oh yes, there are a few series produced on what could happen or what to do during a zombie apocalypse. On YouTube, there is a vast amount of videos on how to survive if such an event was to occur. Now that might all be helpful, but what if you aren't facing an arm of zombie, instead some other type of monsters. In the world

Insidious (Flannery O’Connor conclusion of retreat)

Insidious (Flannery O’Connor conclusion of retreat) The retreat went well and talking about Flannery and reading her short stories made the discussions and sharing very rich. Flannery for me shows the often hidden underside of our humanity, as well as the unconscious bigotry that can control us. Until we come to the understanding that prejudices are part of our conscious and even more insidious, our unconscious minds, we may never get over our tendency to stereotype those who are differen

Helping others

Helping others Jesus spent a lot of time with the outcasts. Today there is a lot of teaching about ministering to those on the fringe. In the retreat house from time to time, we get someone from the ‘fringe’ of society who can be very difficult. Most are not, we help them and they go on their way, hopefully to a better life. People who live in survival mode over a long period of time will do whatever it takes to survive. So they learn ways to get what they need to make it through anoth

Our choices and God's grace

Our choices and God's grace Oh, how precious time is! Blessed are those who know how to make good use of it. Oh, if only all could understand how precious time is, undoubtedly everyone would do his best to spend it in a praiseworthy manner! ~Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina We all know that time passes quickly. As we age this truth becomes ever more evident for all. Yet the illusion persist that we still have plenty of time left to us. We can live as if we will live forever. I know for m
