Outwitted by a small, black cat called Elsa.

    By Waspie_Dwarf

I have a small, black cat named Elsa. She is good company, generally very quiet and very well natured (although not always so well behaved). We are, however, in a battle of wits over a chair, and I think I am losing. A few weeks ago a relative of mine moved and had more chairs than was strictly necessary for her smaller flat. The chairs are much newer than the ones I had and so she gave them to me. That is where the battle started. Initially Elsa was happy to claim a chair of her

Which cross will you carry?

Which cross will you carry? “The life of a Christian is nothing but a perpetual struggle against self; there is no flowering of the soul to the beauty of its perfection except at the price of pain” ― Padre Pio People often balk when they read comments like the above; or when Jesus talks about dying to self and taking up ones cross in order to follow him in life. What is often forgotten is that anything we give our hearts and mind to, demands the same thing. People give up every

Professor Schmaltzenberger's Equation - Chapter Two

Well, I've got my computer up and running again, so here's the next Chapter of the story... Professor Schmaltzenberger woke the next morning not knowing where he was. He sat up in bed and looked around the room. Slowly, memories of his location and who he was returned to his mind. As he got out of bed and started to dress, a thought nagged at his mind. There was something he should remember, but exactly what it was he couldn’t quite grasp. Just then, Otto knocked on his bedroom door. The Profe

A form of self-hatred

To hate or to have contempt for another human being is self destructive, for each human being is made in the image and likeness of God. Each human being is a child of God. We are all ‘Icons” of God to each other. To sin against another is a form of self hatred. That is why we are called to love ourselves and our neighbor in a like manner. Self hatred leads to hatred of others and in the end, hatred of the Infinite. All is connected. If our lives bear bitter fruit it is a call to ‘turn aro

My first brush with the Paranormal.

STORY 1: The Ghost of The Patriot man. I remember moving into the Peterhead house to this day, it had a spooky shed out the back, the place gave me an eery feeling I could not avoid. One night my views of the Paranormal would change the way I thought lived and felt, it was the The Ghost of the Patriot man. My bed faced the door I was very young, to maintain the family my Father Steve would go to work at night. One dusky morning I woke up to find the door of my room open, I could see the hall w

Jesus and the lost sheep

Jesus and the lost sheep "Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? (Matt 15: 3-4) It is easy for me to miss how radical Jesus can be when speaking his parables. The above is one example, the beginning of the story of the “Lost Sheep”. No shepherd would leave 99 sheep to go after one. It would not be valuable enough to do that

Just worry about today (Flannery O’Connor retreat)

Just worry about today Flannery O’Connor retreat When Jesus was talking about ‘worry’ and how it is useless it was, he was of course right. We can worry about so many things and most of them don’t come true. Even if some do, all that worry was still a waste of time. He talked about the flowers of the field, the birds of the air, how they are clothed and fed without their doing anything at all. They are cared for. It is funny, though, Jesus also said today is enough to worry about, or

I make up for what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ

I make up for what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ (Col:1:24) I write about the power of trying, because I want to be okay with failing. I write about generosity because I battle selfishness. I write about joy because I know sorrow. I write about faith because I almost lost mine, and I know what it is to be broken and in need of redemption. I write about gratitude because I am thankful - for all of it.---Kristin Armstrong One day a woman tried to put me on a

Monastic Church

Monastic Church Our church is large and simple, plain stained glass windows on the sides, a large salve window depicting Mary mother of Christians, of all peoples, Christ in her womb, dwelling in the mist of the Father and the Holy Spirit, pregnant with Divine Life, grace poured out upon this most humble of women, knowing her total dependence on God’s grace. After Vigils, it is peaceful and dark, the soft glow of the lamp before the tabernacle, where the “Heart of the World” dwell

To speak firmly yet gently

To speak firmly yet gently Paradoxes are always with us. Today there is much to argue over, to try prove a point, and in doing that to become angry, bitter and argumentative. When that happens it joins in the cultural trend today to take offence very easily. We need to center ourselves, think about what we believe, pray about it and make our faith a living reality….not something that lives in the top three inches of our heads. Pope Frances is speaking from the heart, just as Christ Jesu

Monk-within retreat

Monk-within retreat For many people the monastic-archetype is a powerful one. Monasticism is not just a movement in Christianity but is world wide in many religions. Buddhism and Hinduism have monks and the desire to be alone and with God or the ‘Absolute’ is not a longing that is rare. This weekend, we are having the Monk-Within retreat and as usual the retreat house is full. It is one of our most popular retreats. Br. Michael and Sandy M. are giving the retreat. Sandy is a Lay Ciste

Final achievement

Final achievement (Purifying love) People long for and fear love, often in equal measure. Love demands everything as well as making the lover vulnerable and out of control. It burns; it gives joy and all that keeps it from fulfillment causes deep pain. Yet the joy is greater when the lover finds the beloved and cannot rest until oneness is achieved. Without this thirst life is a cold and lonely affair, yet the seeking, even if not found in this life is worth the effort. Seek

Months mind mass

Months mind mass After having received a vision of purgatory, St. Catherine of Genoa could not say enough about the happiness which is to be found there. Of course, the Saint did not mince words about the pain souls experience as well. In her treatise on purgatory, she wrote, “I believe no happiness can be found worthy to be compared with that of a soul in Purgatory except that of the saints in Paradise; and day by day this happiness grows as God flows into these souls, more and more as the hi

The heart of the matter

The heart of the matter I think that's a struggle of every Christian, to be able to get to that point where they're in constant prayer with God -so that everything they do, in thought, in speech, in work, is praising God and worshipping God.--Troy Polamalu If God exists, then not to be in touch with that reality is living in the greatest illusion. We get caught up in rules and regulations and laws (which are important) but in the process we can forget the heart of the matte

I was in prison and you visited me

I was in prison and you visited me I am not much of a letter writer; in fact I hated corresponding by letter. Even after I started scripting 17 years ago, letter writing for me was very rare. A couple of years ago, all of this changed. Not sure how I got started, but now I am writing to six prisoners. Three on a very regular basis, the others more infrequently, I always let them lead. If they write I respond, if they don’t I figure they don’t need to write me anymore. The prisoner

Night of Revenant

Ever since I was a teenager, I loved watching a good zombie flick, especially those old B-rated one. Over the years, I saw both the original and remakes of Night of the Living Dead, the George A. Romero's films and recently started following The Walking Dead. When the first PlayStation came out, played almost every zombie game there was after the release of Resident Evil. Now most likely about everyone is familiar with the concept of vampires and zombies thanks to Hollywood and other forms of m

Prayer of fatigue

The prayer of fatigue But I have calmed and quieted myself; I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content. (Psalm 131:2) When worn out, the mind sluggish, to sit and that only, is the best form of prayer. Just look out the window, or sit with the room dark, listen to your breathing and don’t worry. This can become a deep form of rest, a focus kept in a soft manner, breathing gently and sitting in faith before a silent yet loving God.

Professor Schmaltzenberger's Equation - Chapter One

This next story of several Chapters contains elements of mystery, suspense, drama, greed, crime, heroic effort and hopefully some humor within it...just like everyday real life. I had fun writing it, and I hope you have some fun reading it, poor thing that it is. If I had real talent as a writer it would be much better, but I do the best I can. A place to stand from

A place to stand from In a world without the law of God, you have chaos, oppression, tyranny, and everyone doing what is right in their own eyes. Randall Terry Religion can go either way. When married to politics you get literally “The Whore of Babylon”. The will to power can swallow the central core of most faiths. In Christianity, when powerful in the political arena, can become a force for great harm. Popes should not be politicians, but the servant of all. In a wo

Our paths go forward only

Our paths go forward only To pass from estrangement from God to be a son of God is the basic fact of conversion. That altered relationship with God gives you an altered relationship with yourself, with your brother man, with nature, with the universe. --E. Stanley Jones Many people believe in God, perhaps most. For many God is an afterthought, something to deal with on a Sunday or possibly not at all. That which brought all into being “The Word” can be regulated to a place in life so

I can't pray anymore

I can’t pray anymore There was a very nice woman here a few months ago. She was perhaps 80 years old and very devout. We wanted to talk to me for a few minutes, which in fact turned into an hour. The first thing she said to me was “I can’t pray anymore”. Here is the breakdown of what she shared with me. “All of my life prayer was central to my life. I praised God and my favorite form of prayer was the rosary. I could sit for hours and just pray the beads slowly and think about the li

The woman who did not love God

The woman who did not love God I don’t love God the woman told me. All my life I have suffered, been abused, abandoned and now the only love of my life is gone. She started to cry and then looked at me and said “why me?”, then she became so quiet that it worried me. “Why are you here” I responded. “If you are seeking an easy answer I can’t give it to you. Just because I am a monk I don’t have some sort of elevated answer to the awful tragedies that people go through. I have not met
