Our three heroes drift ever closer to the apparition that is the Depository of the Values. Suddenly, Zarkor’s Safety Cube stops in mid drift. Zerak and Cloney in their Safety Cubes drift ahead a short distance before they realize Zarkor has halted.

They maneuver their Cubes back to Zarkor’s side. “What’s wrong, Zarkor?” Zerak asks. “Why did you stop? Is there danger ahead?”

Zarkor, coming slightly out of his trance, replies mechanically, “There is confusion. I am receiving opposing telepathic messages. Some Values want me to continue, some want me to return to the ship.” Zarkor is silent for a while, an uncertain look on his face. Then he says, ’There is a great debate among the Values.”

“Debate about what, exactly?” Asks Zerak.

Zarkor replies, “Some fear the Vulgarians. They say if the Values are freed, the Vulgarians will enter this Universe and the escapees will be captured and subdued and their influence on the quality of life in this universe will be restricted forever.”

“So the Vulgarians are real and are the ones that did create our Universe!” Zerak exclaims in astonishment. “Then the ancient legends are true! The evil Vulgarians have constructed everything we know in their laboratories long ago! Their presence in the Universe would be a Cosmic catastrophe, Zarkor!”

“This is what some of the Values think,” Zarkor states, becoming more lucid. “If the evil Vulgarians take control of the Universe there will be no limit to their wickedness in domination!”

“Let’s go back to the ship, Zerak!” Cloney cries. “I don’t want those bad Vulgarians to be in charge of the whole Universe! I knew we shouldn’t have come on this Adventure! If our Universe is ruined, it’ll be all Zarkor’s fault!”

“Now, now, Cloney,” Zerak consoles, “nothing bad has happened yet.”

“I know,” Cloney pleads, “but we can’t take the chance! Let’s just go home and forget all this, Zerak. It’s none of our business, anyway.”

“Now that we’re here,” Zerak replies wisely, “it seems to have become our business. We should consult Zarkor as he is in contact with the Values.”

“But Zarkor’s in a stupid trance!” Cloney begs. “He’s not himself, he’s in the control of the Values! Don’t ask him what to do! He’ll lead us to a bad ending, I’m sure of it!”

Meanwhile, Zarkor continues, even more lucid. “The other Values are arguing that by freeing them, the Vulgarians will have lost their ability to dominate their qualities. The good stuff will already have spread to every corner of the Cosmos and the evil ones will not be able to manage what has already transpired. It will be too late for them!”

Our three heroes become silent in contemplation of the fearful decision they must make.

Finally, Zarkor has made his decision. “We will continue to the Depository and free the Values,” he says in a determined voice. “This is our original quest and we must fulfill our mission. We must trust in the wisdom of the Values who wish for freedom!”

At that, Zarkor in his Safety Cube begins drifting toward ever more quickly toward the distant Depository, still a faint glow ahead in the nothingness of the Great Void.

“We’ll follow Zarkor, Cloney,” Zerak advises. “We’ll see what happens as we approach, but be watchful. We must be alert at all times.”

The three drift on, anxious as to their future and to the future of the entire Universe.

After what seems like a very long while, the glow in the distance has become clearer. “Look,” Cloney exclaims, “we’re a lot closer now, but it’s just a bunch of mist still! Where’s the building? I thought this was the Depository!”

“It may not be what we expect,” Zerak says, straining his eyes to see better. “We don’t really know what to expect, do we? These Values are strange creatures, Cloney, if they are creatures at all.”

“What do you mean?” Cloney asks nervously.

“Well, what’s a Value?” Zerak says, himself wondering what lies ahead. “A value of what? If they’re the good stuff, as Zarkor says, what is good stuff? Are they emotions like happiness or joy? How could this be? I have lots of questions, too, Cloney. Zarkor’s Theory posits ours is a messed-up Universe because the Vulgarians hid all this good stuff away from us, and that’s why we have troubles and problems in life. If these Values are free and spread around, what would it mean to the Universe? How would our lives change? I just don’t know if this is a good idea, but we’re caught up in it now for good or ill.”

“Yeah,” Cloney agrees thoughtfully. “I don’t understand it, either. I don’t think Zarkor has thought all this out. He just says everything would get better, but he doesn’t know everything. He just spouts out stuff without thinking. That’s why he’s always getting himself in trouble, and us with it.” Cloney thinks for a moment. “How come if I’m Zarkor’s clone I’m not just like him? I mean, I don’t come up with stupid Theories and build exploding trash compactors or loose my brain in distant jungles. I’m not like him at all.”

“I know, Cloney,” Zerak says. “See, Zarkor being Zarkor, he was in a hurry when he cloned you. He was behind on all his chores at home so I was trying to get him to get a move on instead of sitting around thinking and visiting pawn shops. He got mad and went into the laboratory and cloned himself – that’s you – and in the process, of course, he was careless and didn’t pay attention to details. Zarkor’s never interested in details. So you’re not an exact copy. Thank goodness.

“He tried to hide you from me at first. He’d sneak into his room and send you out to do his chores trying to make me think you were him. Then he’d come around pretending to be all tired out from all his hard work. But I was suspicious and discovered the truth. Zarkor can’t fool me, I know him too well.”

Cloney thinks this over. “Yeah, I remember him teaching me how to do his stuff. I didn’t know any better, so I just did what he told me to do. I thought doing chores around the house was what I was supposed to do in life. I was happy, though. I’m still happy. Except in moments like we’re in now…”

Two voices are vaguely heard, as echoes of a hurried conversation…

“They’re getting more and more restless; I think there’s something up. This is fast becoming a serious situation. We’ve got to do something.”

“Double the guards, then. There’s still that one missing. Sets a bad example for the rest, they get ideas. And where’s  that Sentry? Send out a patrol. We can’t take any chances of others trying to escape. It’s those in accounting, the fools. Who hired them, anyway?”

“Umm, you did, Sir.”

“Well, I had to. Orders from above. Seems they’re pals of the upper echelon. It’s all this cronyism. It’s all Their fault, anyway. I don’t understand their motives. It’s everywhere, you know. That’s the problem. Well, I’m not supposed to understand, just take orders. The whole setup is defective. Typical.”

“Yeah, and the way things are, it hampers us in our duties, too. I mean, if all this crumbles, we’re the ones who’ll take the fall. I’ve never seen them so agitated!”

“Maybe we need another lockdown, confine them.”

“No, that would take too many guards away from the perimeter. I’m wondering if there’s something from outside causing all this. We’ve picked up nothing on the sensors.”

“But no one knows abut us, or not suppose to know! How could anything be fool enough to enter this damn nothingness? No one could discover us here. There’s no rationale behind that possibility. We’ve been located here for that very reason.”

“What I fear is Them being alerted. I just hope the Supervisors are smart enough to keep this quiet. Their necks are in the noose, too.”

“Yeah…”

As Zarkor, Zerak and Cloney in their Safety Cubes drift relentlessly closer to their objective, the Depository of the Values, suddenly many small bright objects surround them in the nothingness. Our three heroes halt their progress in wonder, watching the glowing points of light swirl brilliantly around them. Soon they are enclosed in a dazzling firework of blazing pinpoints of light.

“What’s happening!” Cloney shouts out in dismay, confused by the glittering apparitions encircling them.

“I don’t know!” Zerak exclaims. “Stay calm, Cloney! These may be here to help us!”

Zerak turns to Zarkor. “Zarkor! What are these things?! Are we in danger?!”

But Zarkor has once again returned to his all consuming telepathic trance, his eyes withdrawn deeply into their sockets, dim and unknowing.
