Through the Eyes of Love
Two years ago my husband and I traveled to Portugal with one of our our daughters and her family. We were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. It was a wonderful trip filled with amazing monasteries, palaces, churches, cobblestone streets, and very kind and hardworking people. Our daughter has always been the rebel of our 3 children but she has a wonderful heart. This was her third trip to Portugal and she was very excited to share the experience with us. When she went the first time I asked her to please go to Fatima, where Our Lady appeared to 3 little shepherd children in 1917. She did and it made quite an impression on her.
I was really looking forward to our treck to Fatima but when we got there the beautiful meadow of the apparitions was covered with concrete and full of people who didn't realize this was "MY" holy ground...There were these gas furnaces where you could place wax replicas of body parts as you prayed for loved ones with corresponding health issues. It just seemed very strange to me and very commercialized.
The original Basilica was closed for restoration and the new Basilica was very contemporary. Guess it just wasn't at all what I had in mind. I could see that our daughter and our grandson were touched by this place and as time has gone by it has become quite special to me as I bring those memories to mind. I can now see Fatima through my daughter's eyes. It is a holy place of many miracles and one of those miracles is my change of heart. Maybe we need to look at things that upset us through other eyes -Maybe we need to look at things through Jesus' eyes.
