Wild horse

.ZZ.

We have a favorite spot to go camping in the Arizona mountains near Heber. Twice while we were there we caught a glimpse of a feral horse. At first we thought he wandered away from one of the many horse campers that are in the area. When we first saw him I went down to one of the horse camps and asked if they were missing a horse. They told me he was wild and lives year round there. Many have tried to round him up but he escapes.

It snows a lot in the winter and the summers can be dry for weeks at a time until the monsoons arrive. It makes us wonder how he survives, but he does, year after year, as we have seen him on 2 annual trips.

He has a very long mane and tail of course. He would just walk by our camp and not get too close, it was rare to get these pics.

So gorgeous!  What a perfect shot! I love the wind in it's mane as it looks at the camera.

That mane would come in handy to grab if you were an Indian. :)

Good point about the she or he, we never could really tell. ;)

Was thinking 9 to 12 hundred pound mare but that's not right, the breeds are too diverse.  We'd a packer mule and she was a giant!

There are bears in the area, but he can run like the wind!

Which reminds me of 2 bear cubs that we saw almost every day running from what we think was their den right by our camp. They can really motor! ;)

Yes, definitely a mare, possibly mustang by the looks of her. Absolutely beautiful buckskin coloring with all the dapples on her coat. You said the conditions are harsh in that area, so yeah, most likely a mustang since they're super tough and used to living in those conditions. Gorgeous horse- I want her- and equally gorgeous pictures! Great job!

Cool, whenever she made a rare appearance I couldn't get a good look from behind. :)

In that first pic it looks a little like something going on down there, but thanks for the confirmation. ;)

Yeah, they really are. She looks great though, for being on her own in the wild. She almost looks too good. Are you sure no ones taking care of her? Her mane and tail look like they've almost been brushed. My horse has long hair like this and if it's not combed regularly it'll develop tangles that are almost like dreadlocks, and I don't really see too much of that on her. She's also really clean, and quite plump for a wild horse. Hmmm, strange.

The only thing I can think of is she scavenges what ever food the horse campers leave behind. I'm positive she is wild, as I mentioned she has been seen by us over a 2 year period, and the local horse people who would know said she was wild.

She does look very healthy.

You always seem to see the coolest things when you're camping. I just get eaten by mosquitoes.

Speaking of tents, this was ours with the rain tarp on. It was octagonal. Sitting inside if you used your imagination, it felt like the inside of a flying saucer.

Things were fine until the monsoons arrived. Ankle deep water.

We liked the spot so much we overstayed the season.
