White Mountains Elk Study

.ZZ.

We had a chance to participate in an elk study of the vast herd of Aspen Ridge, high (9500 feet) in the White Mountains of Arizona.

Every day, without fail, we would be rewarded with a great view from our perch on a ridge overlooking a large meadow.

This video [2:51] shows a herd of about 65 beautiful animals. We especially enjoyed to young ones playing and running.

Very cool, we've been wanting to get involved with the annual ferret census in our area, that seems decidedly less majestic than this!

We really enjoyed it, actually my wife liked the area so much she wants her ashes scattered up there! (True story)

I wish the first video showed more of the herd, she should have panned right!

BTW, It was me making noise that made them nervous and run. D'oh.

I had a friend with a pet ferret a long time ago, they are pretty cool.

HAHA Ferrets stink but we have a population of wild  Black Footed Ferrets  in my area which the DNR works pretty hard at preserving because theyre highly endangered.

LOL, yes they stink. I had no idea any of those were endangered though.

BTW, it's a long way north, but you ever make it up to Springerville? That was the nearest town from Aspen Ridge. (about 26 miles)

They were in fact thought extinct for a while.

No actually traveling AZ and specifically that area of the state  is our main goal for this summer.  Then we're gonna hop up to the San Juan for some rainbow fishing. (ok maybe thats my main goal

Those are from the month of May, pretty high elevation, about 7000 feet.

They were taken near the tiny town of "Weed" NM.

I forgot to mention we didn't have a license or gear at the time, just my wife's camera. I couldn't believe how "tame" they were, I guess they don't get many folks around those parts.

May-June is the trout spawning season. In AK they close all the rivers during that time for that very reason. The hogs which you'd normally never see lay beds in the shallows and get stupid about taking a fly - hormones and whatnot I guess.

Well hell Weed + Trout it sounds like an omen!!!
