You know when you've waited so long to do something, and when you finally get it, you have no idea what to do with it? Like buying fancy chocolate and wanting to "save it for later." Well I have finally got me some high speed internets. Dial up just wasn't cutting it for me, getting booted whenever I opened a new page. Many times, the computer was thisclose to being thrown out the window. Of course it wasn't the 'puter's fault. It's mine for living in the middle of nowhere. Everywhere around me has highspeed. It seems that my dinky little four houses of a town weren't worth it. I've been getting flyers and junk mail for this internet satellite and finally broke down and bought it. It's pricy but hey, I can youtube now
.
That is where the problem lies. I have been without highspeed for ten months and for ten months, I have not been able to youtube, look at the video clips on this site, even look at photos that people have uploaded because I get the boot if I click on something. Even the ever-popular I Can Has Cheezebuger site is super pokey. Even when it says "done", there are still pictures that have not loaded properly. I feel like I have been missing out! On what, I don't really know. But it does make one feel lame when you say, "No, I didn't see it. I can't youtube..." When the dude left after installing my satellite, the first place I went was youtube. And stared at it. I didn't know what to do first. For the past ten months, I have been hearing about stuff and saying to myself, "I should look that up. OH that's right! I can't! I suck!" I guess it would be like winning the lottery. There's so much one can do but where does one start? It's not just youtube. It's this site as well. All the ghosty videos, Nessie/sea critter clips, the threads that say "you will laugh your *** off!!. *sighs*
swift internet = happy Melly. Yes I am wiggling.
What else is going on...Oh I saw G.I. Joe a few weeks ago. The boy wanted to see it while we were in Niagara Falls but it wasn't playing there anymore
Are movies only in theaters for like two weeks? Anyway, we saw it at a discount theater. It only costs $2.50 for each of us to get in! That movie was rather lukewarm for me. I sensed the boy wasn't really sure what he thought of it. He liked it, but had a LOT of questions. I did too. I kind of left it thinking "I'm glad it only cost me $5..."
I want to get a kitten. Wolverine needs some tuning up lol. Yeh random I know. What are you going to do about it?
Much confetti for all! *much confetti*

Well, my friends, I did it. Again. I quit yet another job. And as usual, I have a good reason. As you know, I work for the elderly in a long term care home. I cook for them and clean up their dishes. That part I liked. The part I didn't like was the abuse it was doing to my body. I have tendonitis, a torn rotator cuff, pinched nerves in my back (sciatica) and at the end of the day, I feel pretty darn awful. My last day is next week. So instead of working towards being a cripple when I'm forty, I've decided to go to school! I figure, I'm almost thirty, the boy is getting older, hubby works full time, might as well go for it now.
However, I do not want to have to learn how to go to school all over again. I didn't like it then, I'm pretty sure not much has changed. Fortunately for me, I can do it online at my leisure. Sort of. I have decided to study, ready for it? "Applied Criminal Investigative Techniques."
That's right. I'm going to learn to be a CSI! Ok stop laughing, people. It's something completely different from what I had ever done before and after being out of college for ten years, I think I'm ready to try it again. I am currently taking donations to go towards my CSI Hummer....
I start in October and I'm super excited.

I had the most fantastic weekend. Hubby and I went down to Toronto to see Def Leppard at the Molson Amphitheatre and it was awesome. Yes I know they're a little *classic* but they still put on a good show. Even with their supporting bands, Cheap Trick and Poison, still worth the trouble to get there. Trouble? Oh yes. There were obstacles... First, I didn't have the weekend off, which was booked off in April. Then stuff happened at work, and eventually got my two days off. Hubby said he was allowed to leave early on Friday from work, like 3pm. He does deliveries for a lumber yard. Well we didn't end up leaving the island til 730pm! We got as far as Barrie, spent the night then continued on in the morning. Got to TO around noon Saturday morning, did a bit of poking around, then went to the hotel to check in. Then there was a problem with parking. Apparently you need to have a deposit to pay for parking AT the hotel. It was $15 but they hold $100!! Forget that, we said. So they said to park at the shopping center next door, Hazelton Lanes. So we trudged through the shopping center, which is very chic with our awesome luggage (one suitcase and a few grocery bags) to get back OUTSIDE then back to the hotel. TINY room, even smaller bathroom.
It was 4pm now so off we went to the show. Grabbed the subway to Union Station and proceeded to grab a streetcar to Exhibition. WELL, if there just happened to be an accident on the street above. It held up all the street cars so we ended up waiting underground for 30 mins. Two cars come through this tunnel. The first one that arrived, wasn't the one we needed. There were about 70 people waiting to go to the exhibition. We shoved past people as gently as possible so we could get a seat (Melly does not stand) and away we went, crammed in the streetcar like sardines. Then once we got the exhibition, we walked. AND walked. The place was just getting set up for the Honda Indy Toronto which is being held next weekend so there were barriers, fences and road blocks all over the place. But we eventually made it to the ampitheatre with half an hour to spare as the show was scheduled to start at 630pm. Hubby grabbed us a beer.
Yes I had a beer. I've been sober for quite a while, I didn't think one would hurt. And it didn't. Not at $9 a can! I nursed it like it was the last one on Earth.
Just before the show was starting I began to notice things. We were allowed to bring cameras...I figured, it's a concert, you're not allowed cameras. SO I DIDN'T BRING ONE! The camera on my phone sux. Also, people were smoking. It's outdoors, I figured it was ok. But there were a million no smoking signs around so I didn't light up. Just my luck, I'll be the one getting the $500 fine. I had one while I waited in the 20 minute line for the bathroom. Cheap Trick was the first band up. They were pretty good, I like them so I was happy. Then it started filling up even more. It was packed by the time Poison came out. I thought we were pretty lucky, no one was sitting in front of us or beside us. Then it happened. Probably the only 300lb woman in the place had to sit next to me. I'm not tiny but hubby is a big guy and me between them, not so comfy. Good thing we stood the rest of the night. Def Leppard came on around 9pm and played a hellava show. The weather was good, sunny but not hot.
Once it was over, we had to make our way back to the streetcar. At night, it's totally different. We just followed a group of people we hoped were going to the same place. My feet were sore, my back was sore, everything ached lol But soooo worth it
Happy belated 4th of July!!! *confetti*

Blue cheese and bbq sauce

I ABSOLUTELY HATE summer! It's been 30C for the past week (although it seems a lot longer) and I am melting. I had the screens fixed on all of my windows since the people who had lived here while I was gone pretty much destroyed everything. I live near water but not close enough. There's a little breeze but the cats hog all the cool places, spoiled things
. It's not so bad during the day as the sun rises on the side of the house with no windows. But in the afternoon and evening, it sits at the patio doors in the kitchen, the biggest window in the house. And it gets hot, people. Very hot. So meanwhile, as the house is getting toasted, I am supposed to prepare food for the boys. I got away with making all sorts of salad dishes for the first few days but they have since caught on and are hinting that they would like a little meat in their meals. Picky, picky.
Enter the bbq! Oh no it's not just for the manly man, folks. Women, wield your flippers! Don't fear the flames. Don't let your husbands gently nudge you aside and say, "Let me do it, dear, it's a bit tricky..." The funny thing I have found about cooking on a grill as that no matter how much you mess up the food, the men will still eat it. They don't do it to be polite and so they can sleep inside. The fact that this once cold, red, perfectly marbled hunk of meat has been cooked with humankind's ultimate invention, they will feel as if they were eating like a king. And so they should!
Steak is good. The odd burger, fine. Even a hotdog once in a while isn't too bad. But being a woman (ok feminists, calm down, you do it too...) I like to mess with them once in a while. I cooked some shrimp. Some chicken. Some pork kebabs. Yes, even a few veggie skewers! It's cooked with fire, charred in all the right places, the men will eat it. If they still turn their nose up at it, turn to the old reliable: Drown it in barbeque sauce
For our dinner tonight, we had burgers. But not just plain old ordinary burgers. Blue cheese and bbq sauce burgers! SOOO yum! The boy wasn't impressed by the cheese so his was a plain old ordinary burger with just ketchup. But the hubby (who has never had anything more exotic than marble cheese) found the tangy, pungent *ok stinky* blue to be....not something he'd want everyday. Or ever again. But score one for the bbq sauce
My pretentious tastes haven't quite rubbed off on him yet. There's still time....hehe
Happy grillin' everyone

...I'm a soccer mom. I put my son in soccer to get him away from his Playstation and to take his mind of his troubles with school. He seems to like it, he even scored his first goal on Saturday. The funny thing is, I registered him way back in April and they started at the beginning of May...with a game. No practice, no coaching, no nothing. They have a coach but I guess for 5-7 year olds, it's just throw them in, see what happens. They seem to be doing ok.
But I'm right in there too. I'm the only one available Saturday mornings at 9am. My partner works on Saturdays. It's fun. I bring snacks, cheer on the team, I think I'm the loudest one. I was also the only one willing to let my kid play in the pouring rain. The coach called last Saturday morning to say it was cancelled. "Why? It's just a little soggy," I said. "Oh we don't want the kids to get muddy and cold," said the coach. "But that's what soccer is. You play rain or shine. No pain, no gain. It adds to the experience." "Yes but the other parents don't share your enthusiasm, Mel." So that was that. I pouted and went out for breakfast. Some of the kids are so whiny though. They get knocked down or trip over their own feet and lay on the ground crying their eyes out. "MOOOOM she did it on purpose!!!" Gah, they always do it on purpose, don't they? "MOOOOMMMMM I broke my leg!!" So I yell "walk it off!," I get glares from the other mothers (hey I thought it was funny) who go running on the feild, and cuddle them and let them sit out for a bit. Two minutes later, they're playing tag with other kids, not a single tear in sight. I knew it. My kid just runs up to me "MOM look at the scrape on my arm! It's so cool!" "Way to take one for the team, boy." Maybe I'm too harsh or serious but you should have spent the extra few bucks on shin guards like I did
.
So when soccer is done for the day, I load my grass-stained, scraped up, sweaty boy in to my MINIVAN and head home. Soccer mom, I am. In training, anyhow. I haven't gotten around to going to the grocery store in my sweats yet.
Happy Memorial Day and have a superb week! *confettiness*

Out of Touch
Posted by Melly , 09 April 2009 - 12:11 AM
Ok, so I've been a little out of touch lately. I've been a sneeze preoccupied with stuff. What have I done? I was under the weather, came home to recoup, lived with my mom for 5 months *shudders*, and now I have made it back to my old house. It's not so old, seven years old. It was built just before my son was born and he'll be seven in May. It's not so bad. A little isolated. Ok, a lot isolated. My nearest Tim Horton's is 30 minutes away! The closest big city is an hour and a half-ish away! Tim Horton's is 30 minutes away!! Oh, I already said that... I could buy a can of their coffee I suppose, but it's not the same
.
I bought a wee laptop from the store. It works just fine. The problem is in my part of the island, we have *DIAL UP*
. This is the only part of the island that still lives in the dark ages. Apparently it's too expensive for the band to get the high speed goodness. This will just have to do. I guess.
I had gotten Greg a Playstation for Christmas. Until now, he was quite happy with the Lego series of games: Star Wars, Batman, and Indy. But... we have since discovered...Guitar Hero!! Ok..I'VE discovered Guitar Hero. I'm completely addicted to it. My arm aches, my hand gets cramps. But it's a good hurt. Greg hasn't gotten the hang of it yet but he still pretends to play guitar. He jam to whatever tune is wheeling through his head and rocks out Angus Young style in the living room.
Who still has snow? We didn't until two days ago. Most of the snow had melted over the past month then suddenly we get a bit of a dump earlier in the week. It's gone now but it's terribly windy and chilly. The ice is mostly gone off the lakes. But MOSTLY doesn't necessarily mean ALL. There are still ice fisherpeople out on the "ice" a few days ago just a few meters away from open water. A bunch of nuts, they are. Their problem, not mine. They know the rules. They've been warned.
I have "Rock the Casbah" in my head right now. What do you have in your head right now?
Take care, people. *confettiness*

Let's Hear it For the Home Team!

I recently went to a local hockey game in Sudbury. Not really local, more like a 2 hour drive in -25 degree weather and a car-sicky boy. He was fine though. Got a little too excited when my most excellent friend came to visit us from Barrie and chugged a few glasses of juice, ran around the yard, then endured 2 hours of bumpiness due to the stellar northern roads. We went to the Sudbury Wolves game against the Niagara IceDogs and it was not bad. I don't follow junior hockey (OHL) and have never been to one of their games. But out of all of the excitement of going out with a friend for the first time in 6 months, the most intriguing thing was this: the Wolves goal celebration. I sat right underneath the thing as it flies down and gets reeled back up. I have never seen such a thing. It's literally a stuffed wolf, tied to a clothesline and zipped out whenever the team scored. It's pretty weird and a little unnerving, but that's the north for you
What other small town minor league goal celebrations/mascots are out there? Share please
.
Oooh I almost forgot..I have found myself a job. I had been told it would be difficult for me to find employment in the field in which I have been working for the past 10 years due to the trouble I had a few months ago. But I was honest and straighforward, never tried to hide anything. They ended up saying it's not that big of a deal. People go to rehab all the time, apparently, around here and they still work. OHH...well ok then
It's only part time in a little nursing home here on the Island (that's what we call it...THE ISLAND) hehehe
CUTE PICTURE alert!!!!!

Happy Valentine's Day *heart shaped confetti*

...the Christmas holiday, that is. I've ventured into the mall, tackled Wal-Mart, participated in extreme driving elimination challenges in the parking lot, and STILL managed to get a Playstation. Yes. I broke down and got the boy a Playstation. However, I was unable to get the bundled kind with the Lego games included. He's going to have to take what he gets
. We did come up with an agreement, though. For every new toy Santa brings, he has to donate TWO of his slightly loved toys to the Goodwill and/or Salvation Army. He seems pretty cool with that idea.
I am thankful I only have one child or else there'd be trouble. I saw parents trying to shop with their children running around going "I want! I want!" Ahhh! Find a sitter for half an hour! Then they park their carts RIGHT in the middle of the aisle and huff when you say excuse me. Well excuse me! We're all here for the same reason, you know! *shakes fists*
Greg does come shopping with me once in a while but just looks. He'll hold on to something and walk around with it for a while then put it back. If I tell him we're not buying toys he'll say "I know!" then kind of look pouty for a while lol. Sometimes I get all gooey and get him something small. He's happy with an 88 cent Hot Wheel car! Even though he is spoiled, he's not selfish. He appreciates and is learning to respect the fact that he can't have everything and that MILLIONS of children around the world have absolutely nothing. He loves donating and helping charities and doing stuff for others. He doesn't fully understand the difficulties we've had the past few months. He knows things are different but he's not down by it. He knows mom can't work and has little money and we live at grandma's. He accepts it and seems happy to me. Even though we don't have the luxuries we used to have in the city, he has adapted fairly well to country living.
So, as far as plans go, I have nothing going on til the 28th. That's when my family is having their dinner type thing. My mom is planning a memorial/celebration for her parents and her siblings who have passed on. She's invited her own children and her sisters' children to come to church and dinner. She's been sort of their mother as their own mothers died when they were very young. So it'll be my brothers and their kids, my two adult cousins and their families, and my uncle and his partner. It'll be different, that's for sure. Growing up, we never did the big turkey dinner thing. But as time went by and people have come and gone or nearly gone, it'll be good for all of us to remember our families and remember where we came from.
With that, have a Merry Christmas and a fantastic New Year!

...when you're sitting around doing a whole lot of nothing
! Enjoy...
You might recognize this dude as the fellow who hosts "Dirty Jobs" on Discovery. Seems he was doing dirty jobs even back in the day QVC
Still more from QVC: slippery floor and time alone with the Dell
So how are we all? I trust everyone is as wonderful as ever. Boredom has set in finally and has led me to do this, search aimlessly on Youtube and eat too many peanut butter and jam sandwiches. I'm slowly settling into country bumpkin mode, sitting around in sweat pants and a tshirt, going to the store in my flannel pj bottoms, driving my dad's heap-and-a-half Ford Aerostar van...*cringes*. All I need are hunting boots and a cammo coloured jacket. Anyone here ever see The Red Green Show? Not too far off from life around here
.
Anyhoo, take care and be good!

Not too far off from life around here
Anyhoo, take care and be good!
*confettiness*
