Big Match Nerves

Posted by Waspie_Dwarf , in Sport 19 May 2007 · 42 views

It's gone midnight UK time, Sunday 20th May 2007. In just under 14 hours the biggest club game in English rugby union history will kick off. For the first time ever the European Cup Final will be fought between two English teams.

The first of the finalists are the most successful English team of the professional era, the Leicester Tigers. Before the 1996/97 season rugby union was (theoretically) an amateur game. Since the game went professional Leicester have won 5 of the 11 English Championships (including this years). They have also twice been European champions. This year they have also won the EDF Energy Cup, a competition involving the top 12 English teams and the top 4 from Wales. If Leicester win they will have achieved "the treble" winning all three major competitions open to an English professional rugby union side.

The other finalists are the second most successful English side of the professional era, my beloved Wasps. In the professional era Wasps have won the English title 4 times and were the 2004 European champions.

Wasps are clearly the under dogs this year. Leicester are back to their brilliant best. Many people are writing Wasps off. I think that is a foolish thing to do. Wasps were expected to be beaten in at least 2 of their English championship finals as well as their previous European cup final, yet they won.

I believe that Wasps can win tomorrow, I'm not sure that I believe they will win. Win or lose I shall be there, at Twickenham, shouting my loudest and willing them towards victory.

There is still 14 hours to go but I can already feel that mix of nerves, excitement and anticipation I always get before a big game.

COME ON YOU WAAASSSSSSPS!!!!

I played a little at school. I had to, it was compulsory for a year or two. I was no good at it though. I was the little short, fat kid with glasses that normally gets picked for a team last. In my case I was picked second to last (their was another short, fat kid with glasses but he was slower than me). My lasting memory is of being tackled and ending up with my face in the mum. I can still remember the taste of the chalk line nearly 30 years later.

I am not a betting man, however the year Wasps won the European title I was so convinced we would win that year that I put a few pounds on them at the start of the season and made a reasonable return.

This year I have been convinced that we would reach the final from the early stages of the competition. I'm not so sure that we will beat Leicester though. Mind you when we played Leicester in the Zurich Final (English Championship) a couple of years ago I was more convinced that Leicester would win. Wasps out played them an won the championship for the third straight year.

Wasps were  the only team to have reached the final of the old Pilkington Cup / Tetley Bitter Cup competition 4 times and lose 4 times. I was at the last of those loses in 1998. We went on to win it for the next two years. Including those two victories Wasps have gone on to reached the final of eight major competitions and won all 8 of them. I have been at all 8 of those wins. This is why I think it would be foolish to dismiss Wasps chances today.

I have almost forgotten the pain of losing a final. I really don't want to remember what it feels like today.

The view from my bedroom isn't usually a spectacular one, but every now and then Mother Nature dips into her pots of paint are produces a sky like this.
