astrology religion christianity
Hello. Another blog up for questions and all, feel free to ask, debate, rebute and so on.. blurt out anything on your mind about this. Dont worry about not being professional, the thought is what matters and I'm not here to crush other people's views but to see if we could get along, even if I might have come across very different than that in the past at least. So go ahead.
And you dont need to have many words if you can say it shorter, I'd say these things shorter too if I knew a better way...
I made this topic because I seen a lot of people saying that christianity regards astrology as an occult, even evil area. Enter, devil's advocate? I dont regard myself as such, even though it may be the first thought of some when you read the title here. And I dont regard myself as one in this case, not because I was sceptical towards christianity, I'm not a denialist but welcome the idea of "higher" entity like god. One thing: you dont have to believe in astrology in order to be able to gain benefit from practising it, I've seen at least one very experienced and well-professional astrologer say she herself didn't believe in astrology, yet she does give good readings.
Christianity can be well-supported through astrology. I think that if you believe in god, believing in astrology would come more naturally. And I think that the root cause of why religiously influental people (leaders) may have shunned astrology, at least in the past, is because astrology allowed people to free themselves from walking in circles of control. If you look at all the things made in name of religion, instigated by the leaders, things like forbidding sciences that later became a norm, starting crusades and witch-hunts, gathering trendemous amounts of money while being the leader of a religion that's supposed to give happiness to everyone as far as I understand it... those are all means to control people, and astrology can be a trendemous asset for us in living our lives.. what? More fulfillingly, and use more of your (god-given) potentials as you may believe god ment it to be. I mean, he didn't just give you all this to make you slaves and live a grey life till you die and just wait to get to heaven? I have a very hard time swallowing that kind of idea, partly because I think we have a free will to act for or against god in any extent that's in our power, even though the whole concept of "acting against god" can be turned to "everything is meant to be so by god", which I do regard a possibility.
Still, one thing I won't ever accept, is that we wouldn't have any control of our fates. Odd words from an astrologer? No, you'll find most of the most notorious modern astrologers agreeing with me on this, in that we can direct our fates to a very good extent. We are responsible, in short, and no matter if you're a religious person or not, you shouldn't run from this. Responsible means to have power/decisivity over consequences, and we have that.
I've come to realise that astrology stems from something big that's in the background, something so big it influences all of us on this planet. Can you dig that? It's big, and it affects our psyches in a profound way. It also affects animals as far as we know, quite likely plants too although I've not been able to confirm that yet. It's probably no coincidence though, that when Sun enters Cancer in tropical zodiac, it's usually the time around then for plants to release their seeds, just like Cancer in sexual planets can easily make the impregnation a more important part of the sexual intercourse. A sign of fertility, and many people born around the time when Sun is in Aries or Pisces may be unplanned children. I know from experience this can easily be a severe thing to think of, that why I can say it out loud. Those children were result of impregnation happened around the time Cancer was more influenced. The so-called baby-boomers are also the generation of when Pluto was in Cancer. So you can see it affecting the physical in us too... our skin quality, tendency to get ill.. I say all this to give you picture of the things the source we observe through astrology, influences: both the physical and mental us. Even spiritual too, some say, and I tend to agree on this too although I've not much experience on that particular field yet. Just enough to say I agree. A big, unseen thing of which we have been able to observe only the outcomes so far, and give it some form of concept through astrology. It very much doesn't seem to be of physical nature, at least we've not been able to identify it's physical context so far, but of something more abstract and lingering in that it's always there in some form. It could very well be god, part of god, or something god has laid down upon us. God, or a higher entity. The bottom line of why I think astrology can very much support christianity and other religions. The thing is like a test we keep facing until we overcome ourselves there, more and more. The more we overcome our shortcomings there, the more we can live our life fully. As in be happy about how things are, feel happiness where some in our physical and worldly situation would feel miserable and downtrodden. To be more able to dream and have visions which you want to see through, to be more able to be decisive when it's most called-for and be able to love more.
To have a feeling that "hey, this is my life, it's based on the way I live, and there's a lot of things I can do to make a change where I see a need for it". To give people more sincere happiness and the kind of happiness many religions go on about. It's just that astrology is based on facing reality too, and it can be controversial with the ways religion says how we should live, controversial with things like "ten commandments". This is partly because astrology teaches us to face and accept our very selves, and it teaches that by nature, some of us can be more selfish in certain areas, to an extent of cheating your love or even killing a person. What astrology teaches there is not to say "hey, I'm a Scorpio so I could hold up a hitman job, be a killer" nor "I'm a Gemini, it's just natural for me to sleep with everyone", but to look within and ask ourselves, is that really necessary and can there be another way. It teaches us to face those parts of ourselves and handle them as they are. It teaches that one size is not fit for everyone when it comes to living your life. Some of us need to adjust our lives more if we want to avoid hurting each other. So, the bottom line in this case is that though you can aim for the same good things you aim in religion, through astrology, astrology doesn't assume that everybody is the same, which I think religion assumes if it can give more spesific guidelines to how to "be good". Psychology may thus be more acceptable for religion than astrology, in that it doesn't undermine this basic sort of authoritarianism that's attached to religions.
But while questioning the guidelines religions give us, things like ten commandmends, questioning them by giving alternate ways to approach the problems and alternate views on how we should live our lives to be happier, while that can be an audacious thing to question something that's considered a core part of religion, I think it's also a very healthy and welcome questioning. The bottom line of religion is, god or a higher entity exists. In christianity, the next bottom line after that is the thought of god being good, I'd say that in hierarchies of bottom lines that is the second highest while the former one is the highest. Third highest, or below those two, would in my view be a bottom line of us striving for goodness. I see those coming in that priority order, because even if we'd know there's a god, despite all the ancient texts and such, I'd say it'd still be somewhat arrogant of us to just assume we already got the gist of what god wants from us and what's good for us. I'd rather let god decide what it wants from us than us decide it for god, and let myself decide whether or not I go along, or in what ways I go along (if it's the case that we'll go along anyhow). I think that the best approach for us to determine what god wants is not to only take refuge in ancient texts and their modernizations, but to also look at what's in the reality that's claimed to be 'from god'. Ignoring any part of the picture may very well leave us lacking in our understanding, and I believe that in order to be good to your religion, you should always strive for a higher state of understanding. If our capabilities don't extend to god's territory to begin with, then there's no danger of enroaching on that territory, assuming that god was territorial and said "bad human, die for stepping in my territory". No.. I wouldn't put such words to god's mouth.
It's not what we label under the sign of religion and belief what's important, but how we address it in our personal lives. Astrology is very basically just observation of how things work in reality and the mechanics that support them to work that way. Just like astronomy, physics, except that those two deal with more earthly and worldly areas. Just like they interlink with astrology though, astrology can interlink with religion. And I'd say that if there is a god, the effect behind astrology would very likely be inferior to god, be under god's control or a working of god, if god made all work. I think you can argue with me on this on many points, but I just dont see why astrology and religion can't be fit together if religion is what it claims.
