This is in China/Mongolia. It's obviously a fort - and a big one - but there doesn't seem to be anything about it on the Web. Anyone know anything?

The fact that the walls are laid out more-or-less according to Vauban is kind of interesting.

Hey Pax Unum,

I'm sure you're right, on it being called The Nine Stones. Thanks for that :tu:

I used to drive cross country and by there all the time, but since I moved, I have missed doing so as I always get a tingly feeling, around that area (geographically speaking, LOL) :w00t:

Staying in the village of Winterbourne Abbas has always been on my 'To Do' list. My friend & I stopped for a meal there about 4 years ago in the village pub, and the food was lovely. My friend is a die-hard real ale drinker, and he was very pleased with what they had. He's a fussy sod my best mate, a CAMRA Man through and through  So I MUST, get my bum in gear and check out if that pub still does rooms, and check us in for a couple of rooms and ask the Farmer is we can be cheeky and go and visit the 'lumps and bumps' as well as the Stones :tsu:

Thanks for a lovely thread  xxx

Archimedes- it's so interesting that you think there may be similarities between the Winterbourne Abbas site and what you have seen in Ireland. I'm a small part Irish, so that's of great interest to me, thank you! :tsu:

Looks like a modern fortification, there are military bases and weapons testing sites in the area...
