Germany to become direct EADS shareholder....

Germany and France, at State level have agreed a compact whereby both Nations will hold a 12% stake in the company. Spain holds a 4% stake.

This means that EADS will become a true commercial enterprise within the aerospace sector, and National Veto is removed. This came about as a result of the failed merger with BAE Systems (UK), as the German Govt wanted to keep the business within central Europe (BAE Systems failed in the hoped for merger talks because of uncertainty in the UK's future role within Europe - well done Euro sceptics, 12000+ highly paid, UK jobs now at stake!!)

How much is 4% of EADS? Just wondering how/why a country with massive unemployment and fiscal deficit can afford a programme like this?

They can afford much less risk the loss of 20,000 jobs in the aerospace industry.

Stability for EADS is welcome news for my hometown of Mobile, Alabama. They recently announced a new Airbus assembly plant here to the tune of about 1000 new jobs. Hiring to begin soon.

That plant will only happen if they, instead of Boeing, get the next government contract when offering the better conditions (see the new tanker fleet where the contracts were twisted until Boeing got them anyway at a higher price and with a worse product). So don't hold your breath. Because the only reason they would open a plant in the US is to take another slice of the market from Boeing.

These civilian aircraft are for world markets - or so EADS says... so no need to worry about US government input per se.

And the A400M military transporter (naturally it would be made in Europe and just assembled in the US), and A330 MRTTT (which is but a converted civilian A330) and the CN series. They don't need a factory in the US for civilian crafts, except as a door opener.
