Carbon dioxide passes symbolic mark

"Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere have broken through a symbolic mark.

Daily measurements of CO2 at a US government agency lab on Hawaii have topped 400 parts per million for the first time.

The station, which sits on the Mauna Loa volcano, feeds its numbers into a continuous record of the concentration of the gas stretching back to 1958.

The last time CO2 was regularly above 400ppm was three to five million years ago - before modern humans existed."

"Mauna Loa and the South Pole observatory are iconic sites as they have been taking CO2 measurements in real time since 1958. Last year, for the first time, all Arctic sites reached 400ppm.

"This is the first time the daily average has passed 400ppm at Mauna Loa."

And the reason is?

well ... there is no turning back now, hope we backed the right horse ...

British atmospheric physicist Prof Joanna Haigh commented: "In itself, the value 400ppm of CO2 has no particular significance for the physics of the climate system: concentration levels have been in the 300s for so long and now we've passed the 400 mark. However, this does give us the chance to mark the ongoing increase in CO2 concentration and talk about why it's a problem for the climate."

'the value 400ppm of CO2 has no particular significance'

if so why are they still cashing a paycheck gathering these numbers ?

So... basically you are saying that the entire Scientific discipline of Climate Change is of no value??

As it is an ongoing, and upwardly trending, concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere, does that not imply anything to your Scientific mind, such as the natural Carbon Sinks becoming saturated, leading to an increasing acidity of the oceans, which in turn affects the productivity of Barrier Reefs and fish populations...No??

Am I being too obliquely sardonic in thinking that CO2 concentrations MIGHT have a greater impact on the whole Eco - system that is the Earth?

"Scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is unequivocal."

Certain facts about Earth's climate are not in dispute:

  • The heat-trapping nature of carbon dioxide and other gases was demonstrated in the mid-19th century.2Their ability to affect the transfer of infrared energy through the atmosphere is the scientific basis of many JPL-designed instruments, such as AIRS. Increased levels of greenhouse gases must cause the Earth to warm in response.
  • Ice cores drawn from Greenland, Antarctica, and tropical mountain glaciers show that the Earth’s climate responds to changes in solar output, in the Earth’s orbit, and in greenhouse gas levels. They also show that in the past, large changes in climate have happened very quickly, geologically-speaking: in tens of years, not in millions or even thousands.3

NASA Study Projects Warming-Driven Changes in Global Rainfall

WASHINGTON -- A NASA-led modeling study provides new evidence that global warming may increase the risk for extreme rainfall and drought.

The study shows for the first time how rising carbon dioxide concentrations could affect the entire range of rainfall types on Earth.

Analysis of computer simulations from 14 climate models indicates wet regions of the world, such as the equatorial Pacific Ocean and Asian monsoon regions, will see increases in heavy precipitation because of warming resulting from projected increases in carbon dioxide levels. Arid land areas outside the tropics and many regions with moderate rainfall could become drier.

humans have thrived with higher levels of C02 in the atmosphere. why worry now. we've been their and got the T-shirt. the last time i check the earth is not importing C02. - All the C02 in the world is not just magically appearing. its already here and the tiny amount released by Humans is not going to change anything. its impossible for human released C02 to 'kill the earth' as the soothsayers tell us. they'd love it to be true, fact is no Venus style climate - heat runaway will occur due to man.

anyway. the best advice is don't worry about the future or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing chewing gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind - the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.

No Carbon Dioxide isn't magically appearing, its coming from coal, oil, natural gas that would still be locked up in the Earth if we weren't using it at record rates. Don't worry until we have a methane release from global warming and things get even warmer and animals start dying off and sea levels are way higher.

Didn't they teach you chemistry when you went to school?

I think all they're saying is 400 is not really different to 399. It just means we now have more CO2 than at any point in our history.

humans have thrived with higher levels of C02 in the atmosphere.

Umm... No. Read the OP. The last time CO2 was over 400 ppm was 3-5 Ma. Well before us.

why worry now. we've been their and got the T-shirt. the last time i check the earth is not importing C02. - All the C02 in the world is not just magically appearing. its already here and the tiny amount released by Humans is not going to change anything.

Now that's simply not true. Yes, we contribute ~5% of Earth's CO2 output. There is no matching increase in sinks. That means the CO2 we produce is gradually accumulating in the atmosphere. This will lead to increased temperatures. Anyone who denies this either doesn't know basic science or is a liar. Educate yourself, then think about the problem.

Just to give you some idea of the vast numbers involved. In a single year, anthropogenic CO2 emissions are equivalent to multiple supervolcano eruptions. We only know of nine in the last 6,000,000 years. In other words we are emitting something like 200,000,000% of emissions from supervolcanoes. Obviously, there are other natural sources but this should give you an idea of the amount we are adding. If you think the addition of any compound in those concentrations won't have an effect, I'm afraid you need to go back to school.

its impossible for human released C02 to 'kill the earth' as the soothsayers tell us. they'd love it to be true, fact is no Venus style climate - heat runaway will occur due to man.

Again, this is entirely untrue.

It is not impossible for anthropogenic CO2 to kill the Earth. It is unlikely to wipe out everything but that is not what the majority of climate scientists claim. Earth will probably go on. The problem is that we won't. At the moment, we are on the verge of being the first species to knowingly and deliberately drive itself to extinction. So much for the vast intelligence of humans...

anyway. the best advice is don't worry about the future or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing chewing gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind - the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.

No the best advice is, if you have the talent, learn about how you can improve things and do so. If you don't have that talent, clam up and don't spread your nonsense to other people. Let the people who actually understand it explain and things might get somewhere.
