Hammerhead bat the real Jersey Devil?

axisvideo

Recommended Posts

This breed of bat (Hammerhead) might have been mistaken as the Jersey Devil.

It is classified as a megabat and is native to Africa.it might be possible that this bat was brought to NJ on a boat and escaped, primitive man may have seen him and the Jersey Devil sightings were sparked in 1909.....

your thoughts?

From a quick search, they are about 8 to 12 inches long. Since the Jersey Devil is most often described as running around on its cloven hooves and being a lot taller than that, I don't think it really fits. The crane or stork ideas makes more sense imo.

True and I agree with what you said going on the size factor. But just going on looks I can see how if people saw this bat they could confuse it with some of the depictions of JD.

I'd have named it moosehead bat.

Cool bat. Bats have such incredibly bizarre faces, they are fascinating to me.

I used this pic as my Avatar on facebook, eventually my family and friends threatened to disown me if I didn't change to something less... Ugly. I think it looks rather cute myself.

edit to add a little backstory

Bats are cute... mmmkay...

If that first hammerhead bat is big enough and the behavior matches, then you may have solved the case. ;)
