the 13 reasons why politics is failing

questionmark

Recommended Posts

The government is shut down. Confidence in Congress is at all-time lows. The American people haven't believed the country to be on the right track in almost a decade. Congress might do something truly crazy and default on the national debt.

At this point, it's almost cliche to say Washington isn't working. But the truth is harsher: Washington is actively failing. It's failing to craft policies that make the country better. And it's failing to avoid disasters that make the country worse.

It's nice to imagine these failures are temporary or aberrational. It's comforting to believe that they're the result of bad people, or dumb people, or incompetent people. But the truth is more unnerving: The American political system is being torn apart by deep structural changes that don't look likely to reverse themselves anytime soon. A deal to reopen the government won't fix what ails American politics.

Not to mention the real radicals who are cheering all this on while cooking their own soup, which has nothing in common with what America is, was and ever stood for.

Information is why US politics are failing. I've had the immense pleasure of changing careers recently which has led me to working with primarily 25 y/o and under kids. I have been truly impressed with these kids political acumen. The media has been spinning this knowledge as "apathy" since the dawn of the information age and perhaps in a convoluted sense it is apathy , but not for the reasons Mark Levin or Bill Maher are screaming about. There is simply too much information available, people can no longer in good conscience say their representatives are good people because they KNOW they're not. They can no longer say they have a voice in the political process because they KNOW they don't. With each declassified document the facts about US politics becomes clearer, the recent WHISTLEBLOWERS (remember when that was a good thing in America?) added the needed windex to expose the futility which is expending any energy on the current US political system .............unless of course you're rich

If big business and all the career politicians are against the new breed of republicans then maybe that should tell you something :tu:

you've been popping anti right wing threads out like crazy.

Seriously? Don't buy that garbage, they too have "big business" paying for them. .......Whats the saying about the definition of insanity? Voting this left right paradigm over and over sees to fit pretty well with that.

And what is that?

Splitting the country into good and bad Americans, for one.

Politics in America, and probably elsewhere (I wouldn't know), are failing because we aren't electing leaders. We elect people that put their self interests before their constituents.

I think this was discussed a couple millennium ago. If I remember correctly, it was between some guy named Socrates and his friend Glaucon.

Bob Dylan was wrong, the only thing that changes seems to be the details.

That's what America stands for?

Sorry, misunderstood you. That is what the radicals are trying to do.

What America stands for, among others, is not giving in to radicals. Has never worked...until lately.

The biggest radical is holding the top office in the nation. What Democrats and Republicans use to do was to show leadership and give up stuff even if it was dear in order to benefit the country. What has Obama ever given up? What hasn't the GOP given up time and time again to give the President what he wanted in the last 5 years?

What I agree with the article is that the two parties have completely diverged and big business losing power with the GOP. But where I disagree is that the TEA Party is extreme. The TEA Party is what America stands for; what our Founding Fathers envisioned. It’s the rest of the political process that has wandered and become extreme and again, that is because Socialism has crept into our system.

Whatever man, whatever.

As for the Tea Party, deceit was never anything that America stood for, and it is extremely deceitful to try to hijack the Republicans, and that was done because by themselves the Teaparty would get less than their own member's votes.

What’s deceitful about the TEA Party, especially compared to the Socialists and Republicans? The TEA Party represents those core values you referenced. These are the core values that allowed our Founding Fathers to create our Founding Documents. The TEA Party isn’t hijacking anything, if anything, they are Seal Team Six rescuing the nation being held hostage by the Socialists. Don’t misunderstand me. The TEA Party has some growing pains to get through but make no mistake about it, the TEA Party is *THE* grassroots movement.

The TEA Party, are not a bunch of "extremists".... They are hard working Americans, who want their country back, because it still belongs to them. Sure, their not perfect, but we all want the same thing! (At least some of us do anyway) And that is a return to the Constitution, and smaller government....

I just mentioned it because his biased article seemed to be happy that big business was funding a candidate to go against Justin Amish.

Well, considering who owns the Washington Post, that shouldn't surprise anyone too much....

These are some amazing and troubling times.

Every single politician holding an office...from state level on up...is indebted to someone. They sold out for campaign support...they sold out to get a "position". Local...municipal and county haven't been overly compromised just yet, but it is to some level and will prob get worse.

There was a time when people sought office because they actually wanted to make a difference...they wanted to make things better for "the country". That disappeared long ago it seems. Remember when we had national pride? remember when "the USA" being number one was actually something that people strove for? Remember that pride?...gone...all that is left is "me-me-me"...."I'm gonna get mine even if I have to destroy you or kill you to do it"...

Politics is failing...what a surprise. When the people you elect to represent you...don't actually represent you when they get there..."Houston, we have a problem"...

It's an ugly and disappointing thing to observe....the corruption is just blatant and obvious now...hell they really don't even try that hard to hide it. The Lobbyist freaking live in DC...they have access to people that you and I would be lucky to get a glimpse of, much less actually have the opportunity to discuss our concerns and ideas with. Sure, I can call my senator's office, or my district House representative...but do they ever call me back?...nope...I did get an email from Congressman Wolf while I was in Virginia a month or so ago...that was kinda nice. I'm now in another state so I gotta start all over I guess.

The world is unraveling at the seams right before our eyes...economies all around the globe are teetering on the edge...just a little push in the wrong direction and BAM!...worldwide, international problems.

Our foreign policy sucks

Our domestic policy sucks

Our trade agreements suck (for us the USA worker that is)

The healthcare plan has more problems than you can shake a stick at...

and all anyone cares about is the next election...the question is people...what are WE going to do about it?

No incumbents in 2014 and 2016! No more two party paradigm between the Republicans and Democrats...

Do we really want two parties, do you think that is really the answer?...fine...Libertarians and Independents...or Greens...or Constitutionalists....anyone but the "big two"...they need to be put in their place. They work for us on our dime....

If we continue to vote for the same old parties....the same old ideologies...the same old D-bags...then we get what we freaking deserve...destruction...

That must be because you don't understand what extremist means:

(ĭk-strē'mĭst) pron.gif

n.

One who advocates or resorts to measures beyond the norm, especially in politics.

Yeah I know...those damn extremists...Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, James Madison, John Hancock, Patrick Henry...damn extremists...just look what they did to this country! Oh right...their "extremism" created this country...

Extremism in USA politics is a term used by those that don't have a valid argument...

I'm an extremist Libertarian...I believe in extreme freedom and personal responsibility....so there...

Liberals created the country, extremist liberals. You are right.

But they did not hold the country hostage.

I think what we have is a fundamental change in what "liberal" meant then and what it means now...I am not against "liberal" things..."Liberal amounts of wine was consumed at dinner"...Liberal as in "lots of"...a "liberal education"...when taking into account the meaning of the word "liberal"...would mean "lots of education"...that is prob a good thing.

We can go round and round over who is holding the country hostage...it will accomplish nothing. I personally see huge faults on both sides...and neither one is right.

I saw a clip from McCain where he said on the Senate floor "we all know where this is going, we will fund the GOV and we will raise the debt ceiling"...and for once...the old fart is 100% correct. The question is...how much pain are we going to suffer...how much damage is going to be done...before we do the inevitable. The posturing and stumping/soapboxing is just stupid...from both sides.

Yes, we need to reign in spending...in a very big way...but this is not the correct way to go about it. It starts...wait for it...with a budget. It is both sides fault we don't have one...gotta protect those personal interests ya know...

Liberal has not changed, somebody who adheres to yesterdays liberalism is a conservative by definition.

What has changed is that 90% of the population does not know the true meaning of most words regarding politics anymore as they are just being used as slurs.

Iv always found it kind of myopic when people use radical as an insult.

Seeing how almost all of the views people hold today were at one time considered "radical"
