Brussels to pore over Gibraltar’s tax law....

Sour grapes on display in Madrid:

The European Commission is to open an investigation into Gibraltar’s corporate tax system, which was introduced in 2010, citing “serious concerns” about the possibility that it could provide unwarranted benefits to companies that have no physical presence on the British territory, which is commonly known as the Rock.

The probe, which will be handled by the EU’s Directorate General for Competition, headed by Spaniard Joaquín Almunia, comes in response to a complaint on the part of Spain lodged in June 2012.

Bolded part: well that should be impartial then, The Accuser heading the Jury :unsure2:

Given Camoron's penchant for U-turns, I admire your optimism about getting a referendum at all - let alone having an 'out' result honoured!

Its also worth pointing out - we the UK have raised four concerns with the EU over Spanish behaviour at the border, sea port and economic disruption to Gibraltar. and not one, not ONE has even been investigated by the EU. its only given Spain more confidence to come out and say they are considering a border tax, and close airspace to planes landing at Gibraltar. how that works am not sure, Gibraltars airport joint civilian / military is classed as for use by NATO allies.

with all that said, it will come as no surprise. Spain is a fully paid up member of the EU and Eurozone. indebted to the EU to the tune of millions the EU in short is looking after one of its own. and we dont stand a chance.

We need to play the waiting game. but the time is coming when we should declare a 12 mile territorial boundary - waters off Gibraltar its within international law to do so. we should also move in support of Catalonia gaining independence. which would bring down the house of cards and give Spain real domestic and economic problems. its about time we matched the dagoes and played dirty.

the UK had a big problem with its standing in the world after the second world war, and by the late 70's we struggled to define ourselves. a superpower no more, lost on our direction, suffering from a legacy unrivaled, with economic problems and weak governments we retreated, we withdrew our military assets from the Far east with the removal of the last gunboats went British influence. we became a nation who allowed itself to be pushed around, from the Suez crisis to the Falklands - even tin pot countries like Argentina fancied their chances and invaded the British over seas territory - the Falkland Is' well no more, with victory over Argentina we proved to ourselves and the world that no more were we a nation to be pushed around, we had ceased being a nation in retreat. and this confidence and legacy continues today with more people believing we can go it alone without being EU members. the clamour for a EU referendum grows stronger. - with our economy growing and non EU trade increasing we are once again looking to the seas for our future wealth. look no further than the modern day state symbol of intent - the Aircraft Carrier. - the UK is building two of the biggest ships ever for service in the Royal Navy HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales. both symbolise the intent of the United Kingdom and a confidence that goes with it. its not a case of Were coming, its a case of We're HERE.

Whilst I applaud the dynamism of your intent, the 12 mile rule does not apply to contiguous areas....that is to say that Gib and mainland Spain have a marine border that is susceptible to International Law whereby Gib has rights to areas either side of where it joins Spain in accordance with International treaties, and this does not include the 12 Mile Rule.

What Gib has done is entirely within International Treaties as recognised by the UN, Spain has no rights whatsoever to demand extra cross border checks between the 2 nations and the EU actually supports this position.

The thing is, does the EU demand additional oversight of Ceuta and Melilla (Spanish, North African Enclaves) at all ? The answer is NO, they both come within administrative areas of Mainland Spain and as such are declared as Spanish provinces of Andalucia, and Castillon de le Mancha. (could be wrong about this but dont have the **** to actually check it).

To follow on from your post Stevewinn, if either Aircraft Carrier sailed into Gib then Madrid will be wetting themselves, because their impotence to do anything will remind the Spanish that they are no longer the International Power they used to be....

A point of note: Spain was the first Global Empire Power, predating UK by a long time.
