School Kicks Out Kid They Branded a Lesbian

I wasn't exactly sure where to post this. I didn't want to post it in the religious forum because although the school in the story labels themselves a "Christian" school, I don't like to associate this type of intolerance with Christ, it tends to give the ignorant more false fuel to throw onto thier anti-religious fire. So since it's in the USA I put it here.

From the article:

Sunnie Kahle was just three years old when her school first questioned her sexuality. She is now eight years old and has been given an ultimatum. She stops being a tom-boy or leaves her school.

Timberlake Christian School in Virginia sent a letter saying:

“unless Sunnie as well as her family clearly understand that God has made her female and her dress and behavior need to follow suit with her God-ordained identity.”

“You’re probably aware that Timberlake Christian Schools is a religious, Bible-believing institution providing education in a distinctly Christian environment, and we believe that our biblical role is to work in conjunction with the home to mold students to be ‘Christlike,’” Bowman’s letter reads, elaborating that her school “reserves the right” to refuse admission to students on grounds of homosexuality or alternative gender identity. “It seems that the school’s goals and biblical foundations are going to be in contradiction with the direction that Sunnie is heading at this point.”

Sunnie, who is raised by her grandparents is, according to them, just a tom-boy and nothing more. When her grandmother told them she had discussed the issue with the family paediatrician and he said that the child’s sexuality should not even be considered until the child had entered her teens, the school told her to :

‘Find a Christian doctor”

Now there has been a good deal made of Christians being persecuted recently, and while this is a little different to being murdered because of your religion, it still smacks of the pot calling the kettle black.

Some girls are tom-boys as they grow up, just like some boys like to be less physical... At that age it has absolutely nothing to do with sexual leanings... They don't have sexual leanings

at that age... That is what puberty is for...

It has little to do with religion but a lot to do with old, outdated "moral values"... While I enjoyed the 1950's (as a kid), perhaps it's time this school got out of them...

IMO the family would be far better off taking their daughter out of this school and putting her in another - less restrictive one...

This is as dumb as kicking the kid out for eating a poptart into the shape of a gun.

I'm a tom-boy and I like having short hair, but that doesn't mean I'm a lesbian. I think people should stop judging others by their appearances. Sunnie is still growing up and I find it strange that a school would be asking about her sexuality.

I don't believe that Jesus said not to educate lesbians.

I think the school needs to back off, unless there is a clear violation of the schools rules, such as what uniform she is allowed to wear.

O-sword, you decided not to put this in the "Religion" section why? Because you didn't want to give more ammo to the anti-Christian element afoot in UM?

Well, the story does speak for itself--and not well, either.

Because this to me is not an example of Christianity, only people who have decided to label themselves Christians. A totaly different thing entirely. There is a non denominational church one block away from my apartment that has a huge sign with a rainbow on it that reads "come as you are, you are welcome here".

Ignorant people that have a knee-jerk uninformed reaction to religion love to use what these people are doing as examples of how Christians are bad people, but these ininformed or possibly not very bright people never stop to consider that this type of thing is not according to the teachings of Jesus and therefore unatributable to Christianity.

I think it is more what you should or shouldn't do than what you can or can't do. However since it is a private school they should have the right to decide who attends and who does not.

just to be clear, the girl's grandparents pulled her from the school. she wasn't kicked out.

i think her grandparents made the right choice, obviously.

Yes, but there's no freedom in religion. You cannot individualize yourself, express yourself or believe in the opposite of what the religion dictates what you should believe in, or else it would not be a religion.

Religion limits one's freedom in either a fascist or socialist atmosphere.

...and I'm sorry to say, OverSword, but it's gonna be about religion in general, no matter where you put it in the forum.

Edit: typos

christians was well established under two millenniums ago, where men and women wore almost identical (possibly, sometimes, not even be able to distinguish the two) pieces of clothing in jerusalem
