After receiving some pamphlets from Jehovah's Witnesses and wanting to learn more about what the Bible says regarding the second coming, I starting reading The Book of Revelations. I have read it before, many times: This time was different. I had this thought about half way through: "This isn't about the future, this ALREADY happened." Of course, I had to stop and Google that idea. Sure enough, it's a thing: Preterism. I've made it known that I've not been a Christian my entire life and I'm still learning. So, I am curious if any of you have thought about this and what are your thoughts?

I think of it as prophetic fanfic, possibly rewritten during the author's lifetime to correct for things that didn't happen.

If you take it as metaphor, you can quite literally apply it to almost any nation in the world and almost any time period (including, if it amuses you, time periods before the book itself was written.

All that I have heard it is we are in the last days , They say the Bible has been fulfilled and at anytime any given day the anti Christ will make himself known.

I also spoke to a couple of Priest both said that the tribulation / rapture cannot start until the temple has been rebuilt which it hasnt . The anti Christ is to enter this temple . He has to go inside the temple commits his abomination of desolation announce himself as God

Are the JW's still metabolizing their prediction that the world would end in 1914 ?

I rather like the idea that the book of Revelation was God going "You know, this book needs a dramatic climax".

I have often thought it was really about the fall of Roman.

That is what we're told. Why did the priest say that about the temple being rebuilt? Where does it talk about this in Revelations?

I think a Book that you need to ask people for interpretations for, is a bad book :)

Shouldn't a book be more clear, and concise?.....Especially the bible?

Anyway, wanted to reply that I work with a JW . He had brought me the book to read, because I asked him for it. Actually, they are good people......Want me to ask him?.....I work graveyard tomorrow night, I can ask and reply here if you want.

P.S........Jehovah's are Christians.

Thanks but it wasn't their theology that I was questioning. That's not what they believe. They have been go my house a few times and that was what prompted me to read Revelations again. My thoughts about Preterism had nothing to do with what they believe. I really have no further interest in what JW have to say after reading their pamphlet. Their views on homosexuality are not okay with me.

Maybe The Book of Revelations IS clear. If you read it with the mindset that these things have already happened, it makes sense.

10/4....

Just curious. My Parents are " born again " Christians. And their belief is homosexuals will go to Hell. ( Born again Christians )......I have no idea what JW's say on that.

And.....Maybe revelations / the end has happened. And we were left here. This is Hell?

When I hear anyone say that homosexuals are going to hell, it turns my stomach. JW believe it wrong and as their pamphlet says: despised by God. No, This isn't hell. There is no such place.

I have a hard time taking any religion or denomination seriously once their prophecies fail to come true...

So...y'know, all of them?

Probably not. I only know the main ones. It only takes one failed prophecy.

Nobody's perfect

“If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him” (Deut. 18:22).

No mistakes allowed.

You are referring g to JW in particular? If that's the case, I wouldn't take them seriously either. They are wrong in many things they preach.

Yes, because they are the group being talked about in this thread, but also in general. The same thing goes for the Mormons. However that doesn't suggest anything about how I feel about lifestyles in general. In general, I find most Mormons to be very nice people with amazing families. Like anything, they come in Liberal and Conservative. I do take issue with many of the things JW practice. They can be harmful, or even deadly, not just to themselves, but to their children.

Talking about JW and their beliefs wasn't my intention when I started the thread. They just mentioned something when I was chatting with them and that prompted me to read Revelations again. They don't believe Revelations has already happened. They believe when the rapture happens, 144,000 will be chosen to rule with Jesus. Here on Earth.

I know. Kind of a select group, eh? Either way, they were already wrong...I'll bet my money they are wrong on that.
