There have been instances in Earth history when average temperatures have changed rapidly, as much as 10 degrees Celsius (18 degrees Fahrenheit) over a few decades, and some have speculated the same could happen again as the atmosphere becomes overloaded with carbon dioxide.

Refinement of theory based on emerging data - that's the scientific method.

It can either change gradually or in jumps - as yet there is insufficient data to know which it will be for certain. What is not disputed is that temps will continue to increase in response to CO2 increase - just how it will pan out.

I doubt you will notice much difference in the results of drowning slowly and drowning quickly, except your panic level and stress hormones will be high a little longer.
