Breakthrough reported in HIV research

ST. LOUIS, Dec. 21 (UPI) -- St. Louis scientists say they've determined how HIV invades healthy cells -- and that could lead to improved drug therapies to fight the deadly disease.

The researchers at the Saint Louis University Institute for Molecular Virology demonstrated the molecular mechanism by which the HIV virus infects, or integrates, healthy cells.

Although scientists theorized two ends of the virus' DNA must come together inside a healthy cell to infect it, until now investigators haven't been able to illuminate the process.

"Many biological and structural aspects of HIV integration are undefined," said Sibes Bera, one of the investigators. "Therefore, any insight into the molecular mechanism of this process is significant in developing integrase inhibitors."

Integrase, discovered by Saint Louis University researchers in 1978, is one of three HIV proteins crucial to HIV survival.

The researchers found the integrase holds the two ends of the viral DNA together prior to integration. Once inside the cell, the two viral DNA ends are fused by the integrase to the cell's chromosome. The integrated viral DNA allows virus replication. If the two ends of the viral DNA do not come together, infection does not take place.

Amazing break through. Hopefully this will aid in fighting HIV and even be able to one day defeat it. :tu:

I remember when AIDS/HIV first hit the national scene. Everyone was scared to death of it. I was seven years old.

I've noticed the ages of a lot of the posters on this site. Many of them have never known a world without this disease. I hope that they get the chance to.

It's about time that we found a cure. I do hope that that day is soon.

I dont' think its a good Idea to find a cure.. sorry to say.. but its true. Think about it, had they found a cure for cancer the planets popultation would prob. triple! Oh like we need any more stupid morons to pollute the air and cause more globle warming!

There are reasons for deadly dieases. It's to keep everyone in check. It's the survival of the fittest.

Blah, and I know if I were to ever get one of them deadly dieseases i'd take it and live till I die. Hell i think i'd do some killing or something well, i guess we all have to die someday.

I'm sure if you had the disease or had anyone close to you that did, you would say different, Phoenix.

Anyways,, it's about time. I was born right around the time it hit big (early to mid-80's). It would be nice to have it rid of for good.

No, I'm serious. I rather die. If I got the diesese there is a reason. The god's put them sorta things in this world to prevent over population. But even so, there is over popullation as it is..

Seriously you don't think God put diseases on our planet to do this do you? :hmm:

If that was the case then God would also prevent us from finding cures for diseases (assuming that God exists).

Anyway I think that anything that helps us eradicate any disease is good, the fact that it is a disease of this caliber can only make it all the better.

 That wouldn't matter... over population isn't a problem at all. We have more then enough space on earth for our current population to triple, easily.

Survival of the fittest? Come on phoenix, HIV is a sexually transmitted disease. Sex is a natural part of human nature, If your going to quote darwin get your facts straight. Actually, Thats what makes HIV so deadly. Humans can no longer do what humans are supposed to do.

That's stupid. Say you (God forbid) actually contracted the disease. Instead of taking treatment you let yourself die. Five years down the road a cure is found. Your self-suicide for a planet that has plenty of space, is for nothing.

Not to mention with the right treatment you can live for years fully active. Look at Magic. Granted the money helps, but it is possible...

well nature does it for a reason then. its a way for it to get rid of some of us.

^ i think i'll ignore the obvious remark that comes to mind.

but a cure IS badly needed. the only problem i could think of with it would be getting it to the masses, cheaply. anything that eradicates disease would be greatly appreciated by me, for one. i wouldn't wish HIV/AIDS on my worst enemy.

I'm glad progress is being made, let us hope that before 2010 we can have a cure :)

But lets be real about it. In our current time health care is expensive as all hell. (at least in america) Look at how much the drugs are to keep people alive who have hiv/aids. A cure would most probably be very expensive for quite a few years. Which is sad considering where we are as a race. But it's been that way forever. If you have money your life has value, if not, your worthless.
