US armed forces have used this skill during times of war for about seventy years

The British Admiralty and the Australian Navy discovered dowsing could successfully locate German submarine wolf packs. The US armed forces used dowsers to locate water wells along ancient trade routes in Africa. General Patten had two dowsers from Tennessee transferred to his unit for this purpose.

Witching for General Patton

According to a New York Times article, October 11, 1967, U.S. Marine engineers used dowsing to help save American lives in Viet Nam. The Marines dowsed to locate tunnels, hidden ammunition, booby traps, and enemy food caches. ASD trustee, Louis Maticia, was the dowser who ran the program and taught the Marines to dowse.

This was not the first time the U.S. military used dowsing to help the troops at war. General George Patton used dowsing to find fresh water for his advancing troops in North Africa during World War II. The Germans had blown up the water wells when they retreated to prevent the American troops from having water to sustain the army in the desert terrain.

OH! :o But none of this can be true because that idiot on YouTube(James Randi?), says dowsing is a trick. He's not handing over his big BIG money prize to no faux dowsers ....... no sir!

All one has to do is prove that you have the ability and the money is yours.

Dowsing doesn't work by the way and this silliness has cost hundreds if not thousands of lives in Iraq and Afghanistan and untold millions of dollars.

One takeaway from the articles, the stupid device couldn't even detect 4,000 POUNDS OF EXPLOSIVES that later went on and killed quite a few people.  Let me say that again, 4,000 POUNDS OF EXPLOSIVES.

I wonder what exactly happened in Africa, then.

And I also wonder why the American military have spent millions of dollars on something that doesn't work ...... it must work some of the time, mustn't it? It must work often enough to make it worthwhile buying, to fill in the gaps where there are no sniffer dogs or where the area to be covered is so huge that something faster than a sniffer dog is required.

So if it works you'll be able to explain the exact mechanism by which it works, right?

I am not a man, merely a parody of one.

Nope.  It doesn't work.

In fact, I think the guy is probably heading to jail at some point.

  • Just because it is in a book doesn't mean it is real or even remotely true.

Yup. Tried it, practiced it, doesn't work.
We spend billions on the military and they waste it on woo?
We have simple technology that works far better than hit-and-miss guessing.
