You're not gonna get a clear cut answer like that.

Some people will tell you it is indeed dangerous to poke and prod for information about "Demons."

Some people will tell you that it isn't dangerous as "Demons" do not exist.

Some people will tell you that it isn't dangerous, that it's arming yourself with knowledge, that you may even be more protected from "Demonic Attacks" due to your new founded knowledge.

Some people will make some sort of dry sarcastic remark.

So do you reckon reading up on them is a good idea, also i thought that going to look for them and using a ouija board were the only ways of antagonising them.

I don't think demonology is dangerous. What I do think is dangerous is zealous religious faith. If you are a bible hugger so to speak, you might find yourself tested by a demonic entity when you embark on your studies. This is simply a theory of mine of course, but it is a somewhat educated one.

If you look back through history the people who are haunted by demons the most are almost always persons of strong religious faith. It is the atheist, the agnostic, or the non practicing Christian who is just too busy to worship, who almost never has a demon possession occur.

In my opinion, as long as you are a level headed individual who isn't a blind believer in religion you have nothing to worry about. If your goal is simply to learn and educate yourself you will find it a enjoyable experience. Even if you are very religious, the chances of something bad happening are very slim. Just know that it is a possibility that your faith might be challenged at some point.

It doesn't really matter as long as you don't try any of the ritualistic (harm to yourself, others, or animals) "Summoning" ideas that go hand in hand with it, I would think. My philosophy, don't **** with the undead, they may **** with you back.

I do not see the harm in studying demonology.

It can be very profitable, look at the Warrens!

Fooling around or practicing Satanic rituals is a completely different story.

If not, sorry... :)

I'd say it depends on why you want to study demonology? Why not study all aspect of the subject? ie: myths/legend/folklore instead of just concentrating on demons themselves.

It'd helps to get a clearer picture of the subject, in respects to their (demons) places in myth and folklore, before dominant religions came into play (for example, Lillith-Ishtar)

Taken from: world mythology-Duncan Baird publishers:

Demons and ambivalent spirits:

Malevolent beings in myth and folklore are a projection (italics mine) of humanity's deepest fears. The range and forms is enormous, embracing semi human and non human creatures, dragons, monsters, giants, giantesses.

Demons ranged against the gods in perpetual cosmic struggle, and specialized figures such as the invisible oni (author's italics) of Japan who attended the gods of the underworld.

In western myth spiritual beings are are usually positive or negative, but in other cultures there is a greater preponderance of ambivalent or neutral beings.

In Islam for example, the djinni (genies) can be either benevolent or malevolent: they were created out of fire 2,000 years before the creation of Adam, the first man.

See? There is a whole range of thinking on the subject! It has been something that has been with us since time out of mind, it is an interesting subject if you're not allowing yourself to be swallowed whole by it ideas and belief structures. Look at the subject as an interested scholar and not someone who will end up fearing the shadows at night, good luck with your studies!

As Dr D said there is nothing wrong with reading and studying demonology as it's is akin to studying Greek mythology. You may read some disturbing things but as long as you don't take what you read or learn as literal you will be just fine. Go ahead and study away, I'v read a little but it really never peeked my interest to much.

Well, a lot of 'old world' gods and goddesses were 'demonized' to prevent idolatry (the worship of idols, excessive devotion or reverence) by the Christian faith. But this hasn't just happened to 'old world' beliefs by the Christians, they've also done it to each other during invasions and occupations. It is interesting to see how the god/goddesses/heroes etc develop over time as each country/ continent grows and changes.

Have fun :)

I agree with Warrior of the Light that studying anything is good. provided that it's stipulated that the good in question is intellectual rather than "spiritual." I do not believe that angels or demons exist, but there's definitely a long religious-literary tradition devoted to such supernatural fictions. If you really are a level-headed individual, interested in studying the history of the concept of demons, I see no reason why you shouldn't just go to the library and start reading up on the subject.

If you believe that demons are real supernatural entities, however, and want to learn about them in order either to summon or expel them, then I think you'd be better off studying angels. At least those supernatural fictions have a positive connotation. . . .

Id say there has to be something out there as most cultures have their own type if you will, me personally have never experienced anything demonic not yet anyway.

I would have to say if there is good, then there is evil too.... so if one is there... the other should be too. right?

Do you feel they are around you? I agree about the ouiji board... Never touch it!!

What I find most disturbing is that you'd take a crappy show like "Most Haunted" as an inspiration for research.
