Still Waters Posted March 2, 2014 #1 Share Posted March 2, 2014 Heaps of mammoth and woolly rhino bones found piled up at the foot of a cliff were thought to be the grim results of Neanderthals driving the beasts over the edge. The piles of bones are a major feature at La Cotte de St Brelade on Jersey, one of the most spectacular Neanderthal sites in Europe. But the claim that they mark the remains of mass slaughter has been all but ruled out by a fresh investigation. http://www.theguardi...hs-cliff-jersey

First they showed as the Neanderthals using fire sticks to scare the Mammoths. There were some herds of Mammoths just standing and making noise.I don't much believe that the Neanderthals would have killed many Mammoths in that way as well as the other humans around that time. The Mammoths are not small animals and they would have definitely killed many humans when they were threatened. Neanderthals and other humans may have killed few Mammoths by separating one individual from the herd and also by setting pit traps and not to mention that the kill of one woolly mammoth would feed the hunters for two months or so and there were average sized animals around as well. They also scavenge for food.So the Mammoths would have not gone extinct because of Humans.Probably by Climate change. Myles Posted March 3, 2014 #3 Share Posted March 3, 2014 What a feast. Kill the mammoth and tenderize the meat all at once.
lightly Posted March 11, 2014 #4 Share Posted March 11, 2014 (edited) I'm glad they have been "cleared" of driving herds over cliffs. I always doubted that theory. ( Also when applied to native americans driving buffalo over cliffs ) It may have happened.. but not as a standard "hunting" practice. That wouldn't make sense. Lightning strikes seem a more likely cause of a stampede. Edited March 11, 2014 by lightly
Orcseeker Posted March 11, 2014 #5 Share Posted March 11, 2014 Also the fact of the waste of meat from even doing such would not be desirable.
