Well that list can't be right. All the nations ranked above the US are socialist!!! And as we all know socialism dooms nations to unspeakable fates.

Anyway given the economic trouble the US has been dealing with it's no surprise it slipped but it still has a long, long way to go before coming close to Third World status.

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth a war, is much worse...A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

That poor old lady brings a tear to my eye.

The standard of living has went down this past decade.  There are many that can't afford the doctor bill, medicine or food and most aren't on drugs like some would like to claim.

New Zealand and Australia are somewhat considered "free market" (and yes I did get your little insider joke).

I wonder if all those people who voted for Romney that threatened to move here still want to, given the fact that abortions are semi-legal, specific types of cannabis are legal and gay marriage equality is now being passed in Parliament. That and we have free to use public healthcare.

They started calling the middle class here,"the working poor" ,around 2005.
No one paid attention . Working poor meant you made less than 50,000 a year I think .
50K a year used to be making a living ,now it doesn't cover everything. So many previously accepted salaries, are now considered crap

Miss me?

I must not fear. Fear is the Mind-Killer. It is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and to move through me. And when it is gone I will turn the inner eye to see it's path.
When the fear is gone, there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

No, they are not. Where did you learn your definition of "socialsm"? Unionised government run education system perhaps?

Look for North Korea on the list, to see where ultimate socialism gets you.

It is called "inflation", friend. And with the Obama government creating cash out of thin air (yes, I know, the professorial term that Bernanke likes to use is "quantitative easing" -- sounds so much better, doesnt it) for their bizarre spending programs, you will eventually see a lot of it.

You can put as much lipstick on liberal voodooh economics as you want, but in the end, reality always comes back to bite you.

Can't speak for australia, but I'm sure we're going to start dropping with the US here in New Zealand unless we get rid of our current government which is hell bent on selling our assets and privateisation.

Edited to add: when I come to power I'm going to socialise everything.. lol. Ban to corporations and businesses from getting to big to fail, then hang a few bankers to make sure the message get's across clearly, starting with John Key. lol.

Well, that's okay, since some of the job creating projects O threw money at went "Poof" into the air.

Prosperity isn't a measure of total wealth. Would you say a country with one millionaire living comfortably surrounded by those living in third world conditions prosperous? (hypothetically speaking)

Given the amount of "necessary cuts" made to NASA, neither can America ;)

I don't know about the quality of life here, but food prices have increased a lot over the last few years and don't seem to be stopping.
