Supermarkets should 'only sell food'

The Queen's cousin has called for supermarkets to be barred from selling anything but food after his 174-year-old shop was forced into closure when an Asda store opened nearby.

The Earl of Strathmore said town centres across Britain were going to "die on their feet" unless the government stopped big retailers undermining independent shops.

So I am guessing that his shop didn't sell food! Because it's alright for food shops to be forced out of business by large corporations, but not his shop.

The Earl said "town centres really are going to die on their feet" unless something changes.

'Are going to die?'...many have long been dead.Much of the blame being councils hatred of the motorist, and the Supermarkets and out of town malls gigantic and often free car parks.

Strange how long it takes the thoughts of the common man take to filter through to the nobility, and only then because its on their doorstep...

I agree that supermarkets should sell everything, but he has got a point. Smaller shops have been forced to close because the supermarket giants have put them out of business, it's happening everywhere.

Its a tough call, falsely preserving the needs and livelihoods of small/local business versus the freedom to expand your business as you see fit.
