Saru Posted May 3, 2013 #1 Share Posted May 3, 2013 Scientist Andrei Zlobin believes he has identified three meteorite pieces in the Tunguska region. The Tunguska impact event is one of the great mysteries of modern history. The basic facts are well known. On 30 June 1908, a vast and powerful explosion engulfed an isolated region of Siberia near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River. Read more...

Timothy Posted May 3, 2013 #4 Share Posted May 3, 2013 Just let this happen over a crowded city. Yep it's only really a matter of when. Could be tomorrow, could be many thousands of years etc.
bison Posted May 3, 2013 #5 Share Posted May 3, 2013 (edited) Lets hope another twenty years doesn't pass before these things are properly analyzed! If this is meteoric or cometary material, the isotope ratios should be different enough from terrestrial minerals to tell the tale. They might even be able to confirm that the material struck Earth in the appropriate time frame. Edited May 3, 2013 by bison

Irna Posted May 3, 2013 #9 Share Posted May 3, 2013 Scientist Andrei Zlobin believes he has identified three meteorite pieces in the Tunguska region. Hi, I wonder what kind of scientist Andrei Zlobin exactly is. His curriculum here is quite strange. He claims to have a published paper with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, but a search on the AIAA website doesn't yield any result except for a Valery Zlobin. However his more recent paper about the fragments has not been peer-reviewed, it's on arXiv. There seems to be some strong disagreement among specialists about this publication: http://www.mail-arch.../msg112777.html http://www.mail-arch.../msg112764.html and http://www.mail-arch.../msg112762.html Irna
