Don't be kidding yourselves. torture has been used for years by the security services and will continue to be used behind the scenes away from the public's gaze. Obama's stance is a good one and guarantees the right headlines. :tu: and many people will fall for it. :passifier:

I'm sure that policy decision will send chills down the spines of terrorists everywhwere!

It was not meant to. We are NOT the former USSR, NK, China, etc. so that we torture to send chills down terrorists spines. If that's the kind of country you want, it is certainly not American. imO.

Exactly, terrorists tend to be the ones not captured.

Bush and Cheney haven't committed any war crimes. Do you even know what a war crime is? This is an eyewitness account of war crimes carried out by Muslim insurgents in Iraq::

'The terrorists shot my brother with two bullets in his stomach. He was taken to the hospital. In the hospital, the terrorists came. They have an ambulance. They have everything. They took him out of the hospital. They stole him. They took him to Sarai. In Sarai, they killed him. They cut open his stomach and put bombs inside. I'm not sure how much, but a lot. And after that, they put him by the roundabout near to the petrol station. My father wanted to go and pick him up. They blew up my father, and then they beheaded him and put his head on his corpse'

The insurgents in Iraq are suicide bombing thousands of innocent civilians, burning people alive, and beheading people on camera.

If you are truly against torture then why don't you condemn the insurgents in Iraq who have tortured and murdered tens of thousands of Iraqis.

A terrorist is someone who kidnaps and take hostage innocent civilians:

The man in that photograph was kidnapped, taken hostage, made to beg for his life and then murdered.

That is terrorism.

Yeah they're totally going to stop if the middle class white people condemn it.

A society who commits torture forfeits it's right to say they're the good guys.

Great news ^_^, it's been a very long time since the U.S. had someone with good ideas/plans as president (hopefully for them saving them from the very bad image they have now), I hope Obama will also make sure those criminals get prosecuted.

a) yes they have. They discussed and approved torture.

B) insurgents. If we were not there, they would fight amonst themselves which is fine with me since by definition, is a CIVIL war. The Iraqi's did NOT ask for us to INVADE their country.

You want to get all excited about Sunnies terrorising Shias and vice versa? not gonna happen.

OK. What's that go to do with us? Not a thing. They have not asked for help. We inVADED their country. Now they are engaged in a CIVIL war.

It's not up to us. It's up to the Iraqis. Sunnie and Shia to work it out. We have NO reason to be there.

If it was secret then no problem we wouldn't be talking about it. However it was made policy (torture) that is. Craddel of Fish is right with "A society who commits torture forfeits it's right to say they're the good guys." simple as that.

Edit: I wonder how long does it take to get a man to tell the truth? or the truth the torture's want to hear? Torture is usually quick with minimal results. Or long term with programed results. It's not an effective tool.

"A society who commits torture forfeits it's right to say they're the good guys."

yeah but what is considered torture?

and who are these acts of 'torture' perpetrated against?

Solitary confinement a widely used practice in US prisons could be considered torture

Imprisonment itself violates basic human rights

A woman flashing her bits at a muslim extremist could be considered torture if you think about the psychological ramifications.

If it was secret then no problem we wouldn't be talking about it. However it was made policy (torture) that is.

I don't know about you, but I would prefer something we all know would be happening to be open and out there, and limited by well defined guidelines about what the government can and cannot do. At least then it would allow the citizens to decide what they feel is acceptable practice and what is considered torture (at least to a degree anyways)

Closing gitmo is a pr move nothing else, and its something that the Bush admin afaik has been attempting to find a way to do for the last couple of years.
