Episodes of a paranormal or spiritual nature

I gave a talk today for a group of women from one of the local Churches.  One topic that came up on the second session about NDE's.  As we talked some of them shared some of their experiences that we would consider paranormal or spiritual.  About a fourth of the group had something to share, and they were all powerful experiences.  These intense episodes seem to be very common, yet the majority in our cultural will not discuss them, I find this interesting.  Consensus reality is powerful, it can narrow our vision and filter out much that could be a help for us as we travel through life.  The veil may be thinner than we believe.

Why?  They weren't doing an investigation they were sharing personal experiences.
"I warn you, whoever you are, oh you who wish to probe the arcanes of nature, if you do not find within yourself that which you seek, neither shall you find it outside.
If you ignore the excellencies of your own house, how do you intend to find other excellencies?
In you is hidden the treasure of treasures, Oh man, know thyself and you shall know the Universe and the Gods."

I'm beginning to think the only veil that exists is that of our consciousness. There's a reluctance to openly discuss experiences like these for fear of being thought crazy, delusional, or ignorant, but there are places & organizations that acknowledge this kind of phenomenon.

Why?.....Because some people actually say that in discussions, and on personal experiences......I was just curious if that side of it was brought up.I never said or thought they were doing a investigation, assuming is bad.

I have heard it brought up about those in a conversation.....It was actually interesting to hear one persons view of his experience versus someone else's.The conversation also had a person whom " felt " everything during surgery.......

I guess that did not happen there, sorry I asked a question, for a minute there I thought this was a topic on a discussion board.

Perhaps I'm splitting hairs, but how can one have a "near" death experience? Death is an absolute and medically verifiable state, where one is are either dead or you're alive. From what I understand, those that claim to have these experiences are medically dead during these events that they recount, not just near it. So essentially, NDE is a bit of a misnomer. Should't it just be a "Death Experience"?

I think they call it "near death" if one has died but is resuscitated.

I think the acceptance is becoming more common, still many people fear talking about it.  It is not the pink elephant in the living room, but the blue one, an elephant that couls shed light on our lives and why we are here, or at least an idea.

Your question was a good one, sorry, did not mean to ignore you.  The NDE experience has been studied for decades now and it is still going full speed.  One reason is that all of the reasons that skeptcs give that can cause this have been dealt with, lack of oxygen for example, or drugs.

Well they come back, so it is a near miss....I guess it could be called a NMDE....a near miss death experience.

True, I think they figure about 5% of the world wide population has had one because of modern resuscitation.

Sakari, sorry I set you off, I just didn't get why they would ask such a thing given it was a chat among friends, or at least I would have thought Mark would bring it up if it went that route.
