Posted February 3, 2010 #1 Share Posted February 3, 2010 In a new study, scientists have found that small RNA molecules that existed 600 million years ago are in animals alive today, thus providing a bigger picture of human evolution.Small RNA molecules, or microRNAs, regulate gene expression. Scientists at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, have discovered that these molecules are found in the exact same tissues in animals as diverse as sea anemones, worms, and humans, hinting at an early origin of these tissues in animal evolution.
