Worms eat away at centuries-old carvings

Still Waters

Recommended Posts

A PLAGUE of chalk-eating worms has infested Royston Cave, damaging its mystical carvings of saints and shrines.

The tiny pests feast on nutrients left in the rock by floods and leaks of sewage.

The cave is thought to have been used as a hideout by the Knights Templar in the 13th century.

But so far experts have been unable to get rid of them without further harming the grotto or putting human lives at risk.

The critters ingest chalk contaminated with nutrients and then excrete the chalk, leaving some areas with a "honeycomb appearance".
