Thanks for posting this on the UM homepage. I've linked to it before a few times because of the diverse interviewees and perspectives. Richard Leaky, the paleo-anthropologist, gives it an evolutionary time scale perspective and points out that homo sapiens is not immune from becoming extinct.

The IUCN is the recognized authority on threatened species and keeps an updated List here.

Although some might balk at the inclusion in the video of Paul Ehrlich, whose 1968 book The Population Bomb was later pooh-pooed because his predictions (like the Club of Rome's) were off, doesn't mean that the population trend is reversing or stable.

Exponential human population growth comes at the expense of every other species and the environment. Whatever one may think about animal welfare, lack of biodiversity will come as a detriment to our own species.

One of the most baffling aspects about the human race is its ability to always wait until the last minute, until disaster stares it in the face, to do anything constructive with the only world we know of that harbors human life.

The reason for this, I believe, is the proliferation and tolerance of world wide, superstitious, religious doctrines that have no basis in fact; yet, influence millions of people to disregard the planet as the work of some sky god and, therefore, indestructible.

If we really want to save the Earth as a livable environment for human kind... we must wake to the reality that what we do to the Earth matters greatly.

Religion might have been necessary in some long forgotten past but it is the bane of man and all other forms of life on the planet today.

It is just a sign of how self centered we are that we think it's because of us. 25 species go extinct a day with or without our help and nobody can change that. One day we too will be gone and the earth and it's forests and oceans and lakes and mountains and rivers and air will still be here and will fully recover from our use.

It's a shame that mankind functions so out of sinc with the natural order. It's not about how many of us there are but the self centered order of life we live. Cropping and controlling our entry into and exit from the earth isn't the answer. That kind of thinking is what violated life on earth in the first place.
