Cadbury to move jobs to Poland

By Angela Monaghan

Last Updated: 3:25pm BST 03/10/2007

Cadbury Schweppes has announced that it is to move part of its UK operation to Poland as it axes 700 job in the first wave of a £300m cost-cutting programme.

The maker of Dairy Milk is closing its chocolate factory in Keynsham, Somerset, where all 500 employees will lose their jobs by 2010.

Cadbury plans to move some of the Keynsham production to Poland where it already has a factory, and plans to axe a further 200 jobs from its Bourneville factory in Birmingham after part of its function move to Poland next year.

It is the first step of the company's broader plan to cut 15pc of its factory staff and 15pc of its confectionery staff, which was announced in June.

Managing director Trevor Bond said that despite moving some production over to Poland it did not spell the end for Cadbury in the UK.

"In order to continue to compete in the extremely competitive confectionery industry in the future we need to make the right decisions today.

"Whilst the proposed closure of our Keynsham factory will be difficult for those affected our ongoing commitment to manufacturing in the UK is absolute," he said.

I've already embargoed HP Sauce. Now it will be Cadburies Dairy Milk and Bournville chocolates :(

Three of my favourites :(

My life is being slowly dismantled and shipped overseas :(

Thank Gawd Minstrels are still made in the UK. (the parent company is just down the road from me in Melton Mowbry)

Next time you pop in to Tesco's take a look at the shelves for how much "competition" Cadbury's have. Very little except by Own brand variants presumably made at the same or similar Factory as Cadbury's own.

The last sentence is a complete oxymoron, we are moving a factory to Poland, but we are firmly comitted to UK manufacturing.

In a similar vein, Chickens only have to be "prepared" in this country to be labelled "British".

Hey yeah, well -- welcome to the new global economy. This is the new reality folks, so get used to it.

I just read the book "The Celtic Tiger" about how Ireland's economy has gone big time recently -- it's interesting that many of the things which benefitted Ireland in its amazing economic boom are now setting up in other countries, like Poland, or even amazing places like Botswana, Africa. They are inviting in multinational corps, supplying cheap, yet pretty well-educated labor, strong worth ethic, etc.

Poland may be the new Ireland -- also, there's zillions of Poles in Ireland and the U.K., now.

Let's face -- the European Union is melding all these countries more and more. Products that are culturally "authentic" to a region will become more of a speciality thing, whereas big companies that want to sell a lot of products to a lot of people need to take into account labor costs, transportation values, even time zone -- for example, American companies loved Ireland and Irish workers partially because they are 6-7 hours ahead of the U.S., so when American workers are sleeping, Irish workers are working, and vica versa.

It's all very complex.

By the way, I'm of 100% Polish descent, (even though my name does not end in a "Ski") and have a lot of relatives over there, so, good for them. Do a good job on that Brit candy, my cousins.

Well its a sign of the times, but then again after Britain robbing Poland of most of its skilled workers its the least a British company can do by relocating to Poland, a bit of give and take, the Poles have took alot of stick lately, after what the poles did in WW2 I say give me a Pole any day of the week,

My name's.... Bond, Trevor Bond! Nah doesn't work.. does it.

I can't believe Cadbury are doing this.. and I love Cadbury's chocolate as well <_<

Have none of these long standing companies got any loyalty anymore?

Come the revolution, when the ship's cat is our new dictator- Cadbury managers will be the first against the wall.

Not long ago the EU were trying to stop us calling our chocolate,"chocolate" as it had too little cocoa or something in it, so it is therefore 'British chocolate' and should have the same status as Parma ham and Stilton cheese etc. and only be allowed to be made in the UK. Anyhoo...pound to a penny it doesn't taste quite right when it comes back from Poland.

No it wont. It will be,"chocolate flavoured", just like the other "European" "chocolate".
