questionmark Posted September 2, 2007 #1 Share Posted September 2, 2007 Mass exodus creates crisis in Moldova Published: Sept. 2, 2007 at 5:50 PM CHISINAU, Moldova, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Moldova, known as Europe’s poorest country, is experiencing a mass exodus, with tens of thousands leaving the country in search of a better life. The exodus was triggered by the collapse of the Soviet Union, which devastated Moldova’s economy, Radio Free Europe reported. The International Labor Organization estimated Moldovans who leave the country earn an average of $800 a month, compared to the $120 average of those still living in Moldova. Among the most popular destination for Moldovan emigrants are Italy, Spain and Greece, Radio Free Europe reported. Moldova’s economy has become heavily dependent on remittances. Parents who work abroad send money to their children in Moldova, but experts have said the lack of contact between parents and children is creating a society in which children receive very little guidance, and become psychologically and socially vulnerable, the broadcast network said.
