Humans could eventually grow beaks

It might sound more like science fiction than a serious prediction, but a biologist has suggested that humans could one day evolve to grow beaks.

Dr Gareth Fraser, of Sheffield University, said a beak would be “more robust and practical” than teeth and would not rot, chip or fall out.

We will not be seeing beaked humans in our lifetime, however, as any evolutionary change in which the teeth fused together to form a tough, pointy bill, would not happen for several million more years.

Laying eggs is also more "robust and practical", but I don't see that happening to us any eon soon.... Beaks are marks of a "specialist" species... and humans are "generalists"... they would destroy our language skills and who knows what else, plus genetically speaking - if we were going to do that, we would already have some genetic markers in that direction...

I'm not sure just what this guy was smoking when he came up with this idea... but I don't want any!...

Unless our diet radically changed there would be no evolutionary an biological advantage for a simian species like us to have beaks.

Even though some species of birds have ridges inside their beaks that serve as "teeth" so to speak, our particular evolutionary path took us far away from even the barest prospect.

Actually it would seem our entire skull would undergo a major makeover to accommodate the muscles needed for beaks, especially if they are used to crack open hard things like brazil nuts or whatever.

Personally I would prefer longer canines...and claws.

I think the evolutionary need for speech will far outweigh the need to transition to a beak.

Haven't we already had Beaker people?

The article also mentions growing as many teeth as we want back in 50 years?

I don't think we will need speech much longer; texting now happens between kids in the same room.

LOL. You're right. A better evolutionary jump would be skinny little hard tipped fingers that can type rapid;y on tiny little screens

Does this "scientist" actually have any clue as to how evolution is supposed to work??

His theory would only apply under the assumption that mankind collectively moves back to the stoneage, where biological features have a direct effect on reproduction.

Otherwise, it is worth the pixels it appears on your screen on. Friggin ridiculous.

If I pout my lips like all those girls in the high-gravity club photo's, I don't have to wait for this evolution!

Forget Darwinism.Forget all the lies you have been told.Evolution is a lie! Even Piltdown man was a hoax! There is no connection with man & caveman. We can't grow beaks either because we are what we are!Get real!We were created in the image of God! Wow! Why would we want to argue with that?We are the supreme beings that God the Father created in his image!
