druidpagen Posted July 20, 2004 #1 Share Posted July 20, 2004 well this creature is roaming the batimore area. nobody knows what it is and it doesn't seem to be afraid of humans and domestic pets don't seem to be bothered by it eather. it kind of resembles a hyena but has obvious differnces. and is far from native to the us. maybe someone here can take a crack at it? Panthera leo atrox Posted July 20, 2004 #3 Share Posted July 20, 2004 (edited) I suspect that it is sick, and from a known, native species. Edited July 20, 2004 by Panthera leo atrox
druidpagen Posted July 20, 2004 Author #4 Share Posted July 20, 2004 i thought that as well but the posture isn't like a dogs and look at the ears. ever seen a dog with ears like that or a toughed tail? also to date no others animals(including dogs) have contacted anything from it. maybe we'll never know.... Panthera leo atrox Posted July 20, 2004 #5 Share Posted July 20, 2004 Looks like it could be a doggie to me, especially if it's mangy and sick. Not a pretty sight.
greychupa Posted July 20, 2004 #6 Share Posted July 20, 2004 Could be a Chinese crested. Or a hyena, I'm almost convinced its a hyena !!
TheOracle Posted July 20, 2004 #7 Share Posted July 20, 2004 If it isn't afraid of people or other animals then why don't they just trap the bloody thing ?

Erikl Posted July 20, 2004 #11 Share Posted July 20, 2004 Looks kinda like a sick wild boar .... I don't think it's a canine at all (or an Hyena... seen an Hyena near my house once and it doesn't look like the creature in the picture at all). Falco Rex Posted July 20, 2004 #12 Share Posted July 20, 2004 Looks kinda like a dhole to me. How one would get to Maryland is beyond me..
Universal Absurdity Posted July 20, 2004 #13 Share Posted July 20, 2004 I live about 5 minutes from glyndon, I havent seen the animal, but a co worker has. Apparently he was about 5 feet from it, it sniffed at him then turned and walked away. Very strange animal. My friend said even that close, he had no idea at all what this animal was. Anakim Posted July 20, 2004 #14 Share Posted July 20, 2004 It kind of looks like a hyena because of that whole main thing going down its back but it doesnt move like one. But it does look like a canine though!
Quirky Aussie Posted July 20, 2004 #15 Share Posted July 20, 2004 (edited) To me it looks like it might be a Maned Wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), but again, I don't know what it could be doing in Maryland. Is it mainly nocturnal? Edited July 20, 2004 by Quirky Aussie
Panthera leo atrox Posted July 20, 2004 #16 Share Posted July 20, 2004 Here's a comparison I've made using a photograph I took of a spotted hyena. To me the proportions of the back/hind legs look different in the two.
Panthera leo atrox Posted July 20, 2004 #17 Share Posted July 20, 2004 And here's a comparison I made using a maned wolf pic I took. Now the ear/leg proportions look different to me.
Hey now! Posted July 20, 2004 #18 Share Posted July 20, 2004 (edited) Kind of looks like one of these guys with really bad mange compare these another last one more pictures Or if it's not that if you look closely it does kinda look like a hairless German Shepherd. And if it was that it would explain why none of the animals in the area found it strange Somebody should go try to find a picture of a german shepherd with really bad mange. Panthera leo atrox Posted July 20, 2004 #19 Share Posted July 20, 2004 Pic of a dog with mange, to get an idea of what the disease looks like From the looks of it, the animal's fur (what's left of it) is brown/reddish colored, unlike a cape hunting dog. Hey now! Posted July 21, 2004 #20 Share Posted July 21, 2004 Fur can have slight color alterations though...and look at the faces the markings and the shape are exactly the same
NirmalaMaya Posted July 21, 2004 #21 Share Posted July 21, 2004 It does look like he has the mange. Looks like some kind of boar or wild pig mixed with dog..LoL. Very weird! Great thread!
Universal Absurdity Posted July 21, 2004 #22 Share Posted July 21, 2004 Update. A Photo of this creature was taken about a year ago in Harford county. Harford county is about 60-100 miles from glyndon where it was taped days ago. I'll post a pic when its available. The resemblence was striking. They dont know if it was the same creature or another of its kind. Does anyone know how long an animal can have mange before its completely hairless? the hair pattern on the photo from a year ago was identical. SilverCougar Posted July 21, 2004 #23 Share Posted July 21, 2004 Ok.. first, it looks liek it's got a mane, mange, and a cross between a hyena and a pitbull... =\
Erikl Posted July 21, 2004 #24 Share Posted July 21, 2004 OK, from the pictures posted by Panthera and Hey, I would say it is indeed a canine (the first picture just looks like a weird looking wild boar). However, I don't think it's a German Shepered, because it's body structure, and ear lenght, doesn't match to those of a German Shepered. I think it is a cross between a wolf, a coyote, and a German Shepered. Or it could be German Shepered which didn't eat for many days and have been abused by it's owners (is ears cut short or eaten etc.).
Panthera leo atrox Posted July 21, 2004 #25 Share Posted July 21, 2004 Or a mutt. Here is a distinguishing feature between the creature and a cape hunting dog. The cape hunting dog usually displays a black blaze across its head. The creature has a similar blaze, made of remaining fur, but it is a reddish color. I have yet to see a cape hunting dog that displays this color on any part of its body.
