Drone Just 200ft From Plane Over Los Angeles

A drone has come within just 200ft of hitting a commercial jet as it approached Los Angeles Airport.

The Lufthansa A380 was at 5,000ft and coming in to land at about 1.30pm when the pilot reported the drone flying overhead, according to Ian Gregor, spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

At the time, the flight was about 14 miles east of the airport, over densely-packed suburbs of the city.

Police were asked to look out for the drone but there were no immediate details about where it landed or who it belonged to

A report last year by Bard College's Center for the Study of the Drone in New York found at least 241 close encounters between drones and planes - 90 of which involved commercial jets - between December 2013 and September last year.

Not really surprised at this. We have seen what some idiots have done with lazers, now these idiots have a better toy.

When the manufacturers make these techno flying things, they know the idiots will be having a field day....but do the manufacturers stop making them available to everyone because of a few? so far there have been no casualties, guess, as usual, we have to wait for that to happen before anything gets done.

they will end up increasing the no fly zone around an airport to protect planes.

but the could put jammers on planes to block radio control of drones.

Same scenario in Paris last week with an A320 involved:

Serious incident to an Airbus A320 resgistered F-GKXT operated by Air France occured on 02/19/16

During the approach, downwind for runway 26L at an altitude of 5500 ft and a descent rate of about 1000 ft / min,

for a speed of 220 kt and heading east, the first officer (FP) sees a drone in its 11am. He disengaged the autopilot

and makes a flexible resource while informing the captain of the presence of the drone. The captain saw the drone and

estimates he spends about five meters below the left wing of the aircraft. The crew informed of the presence of the drone

air traffic control. The crew re-engage the autopilot and shows the approach.

Well mass consumer drones do not fly at 5000ft

yea, it would take a serious drone to get to 5k, would defiantly cost a hefty penny. my buddy has $1200 drone, and its manual says 1600ft is ceiling. i assume it is more about getting out of range of controls, than actual height the drone can climb.
