Mars One - wishful thinking ?

A non-profit organization based in the Netherlands, Mars One is aiming to set up a permanently manned colony on Mars within 11 years with the first astronauts launching within 10 years. A number of candidates have been picked from a long list of applicants signing up for what is being billed as a one-way trip.

Funding will come from sponsors and donations as well as from the proceeds of a reality TV show covering the lives of the astronauts. Private companies are on board to build the rockets, spacecraft and other technologies needed for the project.

Based on even the most conservative estimates however, NASA's plans for a manned mission to Mars are unlikely to come to fruition for decades, even with international co-operation. So how does Mars One, a private organization with no spaceflight experience, hope to accomplish all this within the space of 10 years ? Where is the technology going to come from ?

Does Mars One really believe that it can do this ?

Who announced today that Mars One had failed? Do you have a link to the article?

MIT certainly doesn't think much of their plan:
