However, I wonder how he'd explain the 3 foot deep and 8 foot wide crater in the tarmac that a P-51 mustang made when it crashed at the Reno Air Race last year...

Certainly, a P-51 isn't super-sonic.  "Bad fast", but not super-sonic, and it left a big hole in terra firma...through the tarmac!
