Mormon church doubles up as a dating service

The first singles-only chapel for Mormons in their 20s, 30s and 40s has been opened in a bid to help members mix, mingle and get married as soon as possible.

The 23rd Street chapel in Crystal City, Virginia, has more than 800 members who get together for worship services, Bible study sessions, games of table tennis and other activities.

It represents Mormonism's exalted view of marriage and its strategy is to get single people to wed as quickly as possible by separating them from married people.

Finding a spouse is central to being a Mormon. The faith regards getting married as 'graduating with honours' and believes that after death you live with your family forever.

A Tuesday night Bible study session typically begins with prayer before moving quickly on to trivia games and pizza.

The dress code is informal and the majority of members of the congregation wear jeans.

It serves the biggest population of single Mormons outside of Utah.
