Is Time Travel Possible?

saucy

Recommended Posts

This is a formal debate between two contestants on the topic of time travel. Is it possible?

Let the two first people sign on and I'll flip a coin to see who talks about what and who goes first.

The debate is that each member has to give an introduction, followed by four body posts and one rebuttal to sum everything up. Good luck to those who decide to join!

The results of the coin toss reveal that Xenojjin will be debating that time travel is possible and markuss will be debating that it is not possible.

Good luck to both parties.

<opening post>

Many people claim to be from the future and the only reason they are considered insane is because we cannot understand it any other way . There is so much mystery in the way time works in this universe that we are not aware of that makes it so time travel can indeed be possible .

Remember back in the days of the wright brothers when skeptics were saying flight was impossible , mathematicians even claimed certain formulas in math proved that the wright brothers were lying . Today , it is obvious that they were not and that the skeptics were simply using logic based on the current knowledge they had on the universe at that time . How is saying time travel is impossible when someone claims to be from the future any differant then when the wright brothers claimed they could fly and many refused to believe ?

<ere>

Are you sure that markuss will even respond ? I sent him a Pm so I hope so .

Starting statement....

Time travel IMO is not possible. Why isnt it? Becuase whats done is done. The past is over, you cannot return to something that is gone.

Same with the future, you cannot travel to something that doesnt exist yet. How can you when it has yet to be created? The future doesnt even exist anyway. When we get to the future, its already the present.

Ahhh but this is only based on what we know today . There are many theories on how time works that shows that time may be relative and doesnt exactly flow in a forward direction . Time is like a line that is already there ... you may say to yourself that time cannot be traveled because it already happened or it has not happened yet , but the problem with this is it has already happened / hasn't happened yet according to you .

This means that there may be multiple dimensions of time and we just so happen to be in this one . Due to this the future can very well have already happened and the past can very well have not happened yet which makes time travel possible . If its impossible to travel to the future then why does light travel faster then time can keep up with it ? If its impossible to travel to the past then why is it if we look at the earth with an extremly powerfull telescope from 30 lightyears away , we will see the earth as it was 30 years ago ?

Good points, but even if we had a telescope to see 30 light years or so away and look into the past, we couldnt be able to travel to what we are seeing anyway. If someone were to warp there at that very instant, it wouldnt be the same as what you were looking at, becuase what you were looking at already happend years ago.

Time travel and time viewing are differant . You are right that if they were to instantly warp there then they would not be 30 years in the past . The method that would have to be use to travel into the past would not be traveling at light speed - the method most likely to be used to travel to the future due to theory that time slows down for the people in the spaceship flying at such speeds in relation to those outside the spaceship , but essentially cutting through the dimensional barrier . What being able to view the past shows is that its most likely recorded somwhere in a differant dimension due to time being relative .

Many scientists believe in a parrallel universe , multiple parrallel universes in fact ... each from differant points in time . If we could break the dimensional barrier of time ( which is proven possible since supermassive black holes can do such a thing ) then we can travel into a differant dimension with a time period in the past .

Yes, multiple dimenshions is a big theory among a lot of scintests. But how much would they know about them until they have actually tryed messing with them? Traveling at light speed is almost impossible, and it could kill a human being, unless some kind of protection was invented of course.

ahh but that simply means we do not know how do do it yet ! We very well may one day learn to travel at light speed within safety . This is much like every other revalutionary invention - before it came out people doubted that it could ever be done , for example , the electric lightbulb . Everyone believed it could not be done simply because it was never done before ... did that make it impossible ? Since electric lightbulbs can be found at almost any general store in countries around the globe , the answer is no .

Just because we have not fully tested theories on multiple dimensions and time doesn't mean Time travel is impossible , it just means we have not gotten that far . It does not mean that it is impossible . To say its impossible before its been fully tested , when the current results so far show that with the right technology we may just be able to break the dimensional barrier ... is like assuming a piece of meat that is defrosting in a microwave will suddenly freeze up again and the microwave will not do anything ( Hypothetical situation where no one has ever seen meat defrost in a microwave before )

I've contacted Markuss to determine if he plans on continuing with the debate. If not or i don't get an answer, then Xenojin will win by default.

Markuss is no longer able to continue with this debate due to computer problems, so Xenojin has won by default.

Thanks to you both for taking part. thumbsup.gif
