Sky watchers seek the truth over new year New

They seem to go hand in hand every year - New Year’s fireworks celebrations and UFO sightings.

Whether people are mistaking Chinese lanterns for alien spaceships, or little green men are using the cloak of fireworks to venture out into the night sky, unusual sightings always seem to appear during the New Year festivities.

This week Vincent from New Malden contacted the Surrey Comet to say he and his wife saw about 15 red and white aeroplane-like objects at 12.20am on New Year’s Day.

Telling stuff...

“There were two or three lights appearing at the same time, going at quite a fast speed, without making any noise.

How fast is "quite fast", and how would they know?

“They would be visible for about 15 to 20 seconds before disappearing into the horizon. These lights had the speed, trajectory and the altitude of a plane.”

How high were they? How would they know?

How fast were they? How would they know?

What is the trajectory of a plane?

...planes travel in all directions, 360 of them, every day. This is simply not a very well thought out thing to say.

“We suddenly saw a slow moving object that seemed almost as if on fire, flying lower than common aircrafts, gliding silently, and in a curved pattern away from Dinton field.

Now it's a slow moving object...

And, it's lower than a common aircraft...

How low is that?

In the dark, you can't make any estimate of the speed of a moving light, nor can you accurately estimate the altitude.

Far too much speculative stuff is spewed in these statements to take it seriously.
