+joc Posted June 27, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 27, 2004 I continue to get these pop up ads even though I have spy-bot and ad-ware (which I thought was supposed to block them) Just got another one this second...they all say 'messenger service'. I am really beginning to get quite annoyed with it all, which is a testament to my patience since this has been going on awhile now. I have received 2 more since beginning of this sentence. Even when I am not on line I continue to get them. When I look at my network connections (I have a dialup server) when offline it says that all my connections are 'disconnected' except one....under LAN or Highspeed Internet, it says 1394 connection Enabled, Firewalled, 1394 Net Adapter #2 I tried to disable it but it won't allow me to. Any thoughts?

Daughter of the Nine Moons Posted June 27, 2004 #3 Share Posted June 27, 2004 After you've installed the zone alarm firewall joc, also install Spywareblaster 3.1 from Javacool to prevent spyware/adware from installing Spybot and ad-aware are tools to clean your computer. Zone alarm & Spywareblaster 3.1 together should prevent anything from attaching to your computer. The only thing that I ever see now is a couple of cookies which I permit. * also remember update your virus scan definitions * update spybot * update ad-aware
Saru Posted June 27, 2004 #4 Share Posted June 27, 2004 If you're using Windows XP, turn on the default XP firewall, I used to receive messages similar to that whenever i turned the default firewall off, so these days i always keep it turned on. +joc Posted June 27, 2004 Author #5 Share Posted June 27, 2004 Thanks alot Scar, Dot, and SaRuMaN!! I checked my internet connections per SaRuMaNs advice and not all were fire-walled. I checked the 'Firewall box' under each connection and since doing so I haven't received any pop-ups! Thanks alot! the best advice is usually the simplest and usually comes from the Master If I still have problems in the future I will look into downloading one or both of the suggested programs. Thank you all again so much!

Xenojjin Posted June 27, 2004 #7 Share Posted June 27, 2004 Ahhh yes the messenger service . Their is a way to go into your computer and turn it off but I forget how .Ill have to dig through my notepad scribblings to figure it out . Messenger service is something I greatly despise . Mainly because 1) microsoft has done nothing about this problem ... just sit on there fat a**'s all day . 2) ever read those popup windows ? Most of them want you to buy a 30$ product that prevents these popups and then want you to pay a monthly fee for stopping this . It annoys me that people would sink that low in life since messenger service really only requires a couple system tweaks to be rid of . It requires no monthly maitenance from anyone and its obvious these people just want to rip you off . If you get another one , tell me . Ill try and find the way to turn it off manually for you . Also , dont use Internet explorer . Internet explorer sucks and has virtually no protection against anything . Try Firefox or mozzilla which can be found at http://www.mozilla.org/
Fluffybunny Posted June 27, 2004 #8 Share Posted June 27, 2004 To Turn off Messenger in XP: Start Menu>Run Type "MSconfig" without the quotes select the "Services" Tab at the top. Scroll Down to "messenger" and unselect the option Click "Apply" You may have to reboot... All better now...and you don't have to pay $30.
spidermonkey Posted June 27, 2004 #9 Share Posted June 27, 2004 The main problem when it comes to popups, viruses, malicious scripts and poor security settings is using internet explorer. Use a real browser with popup/privacy controls. I use Mozilla Firefox, i highly recommend it, it's free too.

doomgirl Posted July 5, 2004 #11 Share Posted July 5, 2004 I had something like that once, it turned out that some program had been installed on my computer from the internet, I found it in add remove programs and uninstalled it, but it didn't really stop until I went through the registry and deleted all its keys
Atlantis Rises Posted July 5, 2004 #12 Share Posted July 5, 2004 Sometimes the very programs you download to avoid pop-ups are causing the interruptions. I used to get this too. I eventually had to reformat my entire computer because nuthin' was working right. It still doesn't with Windows ME, but I can't afford to get Windows XP with all the data on my computer right now.
