US navy shadows N Korean vessel

It looks like we'll soon know what kind of a leader we have in office for sure. Outside of rather he is eligiable or not, experienced enough or not, knows what he is doing or not, we'll shortly see how he handles a real threat to the CONUS like Bush endured back on 9/11/01. I hope that he performs well with this. I really do and I'll be the first to wave his banner if he does but, I really don't have a lot of faith in it. Seeing as how North Korea is a communist dream state, I don't think that Obama will go out of his way to uphold the treaty and sanctions placed on his fellow Socialists. As much as I hate it, I fully belive that he;ll wafle and give in to the extortion just like his Socialist predecessor, Clinton, did. Either way though, we'll know what is what shortly and here's one to keep an eye on.

The Pentagon has sent a warship to shadow a North Korean vessel suspected of carrying illegal arms in an effort to shine the spotlight on countries that facilitate weapons proliferation.

The USS McCain is following the Kang Nam, a North Korean vessel suspected of carrying arms in contravention of a UN resolution. One US official dismissed reports that the McCain was preparing to intercept the North Korean ship once it left waters near the Chinese coast. He added that the US would not go beyond the UN resolution, which urged states only to “inspect vessels, with the consent of the flag state, on the high seas” where the ships were suspected of illegal weapons proliferation.

The UN passed the resolution last month after North Korea defied the international community by conducting a nuclear test, which came on the heels of a long-range missile launch in April. The move to shadow the Kang Nam comes as Pyongyang appears to be making preparations for another long-range missile test. US spy satellites detected signs this month that North Korea was moving another long-range missile similar to the Taepodong-2 fired in April.

Robert Gates, US defence secretary, confirmed this week that the Pentagon had deployed additional missile defence capabilities, including high-powered radar, in preparation for a possible launch. The trajectory of the North Korean missile in April, which Pyongyang claimed was carrying a satellite, was towards Hawaii.

North Korea has dramatically raised tensions with the US and its neighbours this year. Some analysts believe Kim Jong-il, the North Korean leader, is trying to create bargaining chips for future negotiations. Others see his belligerent acts as an attempt to bolster internal support as he paves the way for his son, Kim Jong-woon, who is believed to be in his 20s, to succeed

Obamas first REAl test on dealing with fellow Socialists HERE!

N Korea does not recognize UN sanctions - means it may take boarding its ship as aggression and respond appropriate way. Who actually knows, maybe this trade vessel has torpedo apparatus on board? Or a sub follows it - they have plenty... I won't be surprised.

Well only if the U.N. did its job, the U.S. wouldn't have to play this role.

people here do realise (don't you?) that they don't actually have the ability to search this, or any other ship, without the said ship's captain's permission. the use of force or even threat of force is not permitted.

so what does everyone actually expect obama to do?

as usual, american media is sensationalising another story about another one of their enemies... the propoganda machine is busy as always.

and people are using this as a chance to blame obama? when he has no power over what happens? that makes sense...

Intercepting someone else's ships is called piracy, and it does not matter that UN approves it, as UN is nothing for N Korea. Obama must be stupid doing things like that to another nuclear power :gun:

No - because they are unable to bribe anyone! They are poor. But well-armed. Put it this way - when a guy with an antique shotgun approaches you in a quiet street, asking for a part of your wealth, would you consider quality of his ammunition or his personal bank account statement?

You might want to ask the US Congress that question, seeing as the US hasn't signed up to the ICC charter and so doesn't recognise international crimes it commits as being "anyone else's business".

Mr Black-Pot, meet Mr Kettle.
