Vets in Ukraine are struggling to identify a 'mutant' animal shot by hunters in a remote area of the former Soviet republic.

Locals say it is a mystery 'Chupacabra' -  allegedly sighted a few times in recent years - that preys on rabbits, goats and house animals.

Grey in colour and with ‘fangs’ and a longish neck, it has shorter front legs, slightly resembling a kangaroo, while also showing a likeness to a dog and a fox, say those who have seen it.

Nobody is "struggling to identify" this animal and it is not a "mutant"
It's a red fox with mange.

Clearly one is mange-ier than the other, but I think the point is clear.

And "slightly resembling a kangaroo"? Seriously? Kangaroos are plantigrade locomotors and this fox clearly had legs for digitigrade locomotion. Come on....

They don't seem to think so -

But I cannot identify what kind of animal it is. For example, its canine teeth are similar similar to a fox, but smaller in size - like a marten.

Sorry about the copyright infringement... wasn't paying attention.. :o

Wait a minute.... there are pictures of two different animals on that page. The top one, the one I meant to post, is most clearly a mangy fox. The second could be a juvenile fox or a marten, but it's by no mean a mystery creature. The two different animal pics don't give me high hopes for the authenticity of the story, either.

remember seeing the first picture somewhere before.. and if i recall correctly, it was of a supposed chupacabra shot in texas some time back.

As for the other.. perhaps it is a juvenile raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides)

I

To address the statement that perhaps a dog and fox got it on.. not likely  as they are not the same species

Hmm...

Haven't supposed chupacabras that look very similar to this been caught and revealed to simply be coyotes or foxes with mange?

I think that's all this is.

Were-hyrax in disguise.

Dear you guys. Words cannot express how much I hate you guys. As we fight our way northward into the great unknown, only that one thing remains certain: that I hate you guys with every tired muscle in my confederate body. We have taken Topeka and I must rally the men onward to Missouri. Because I will not stop until we have won it all, and you guys are my slaves. Because I hate you guys. I hate you guys so very very much. Yours, General Cartman Lee.

This is what a chupacabra is supposed to look like, and I don't think they're native to Ukraine. Mexico and southern Texas, mainly.

Not really, a Chupacabra is supposed to look like this:

The thing in your picture is simply a canine that someone started calling a Chupacabra at some point.

And as for the OP, two words - Daily Mail.  That's all you need to know.

I think it looks more like this than the fox, just with a smaller tail. This is a kangeroo with Mange

Remember when Chupacabra's looked like this:

Then at some point they changed to looking something like this:

A few mangy dog/fox/raccoon photos come out and these people change their minds and say "Actually, that's what a Chupacabra looks like."
