Father and son banned from council swimming pool for not being Muslims

A stunned dad and his little boy were banned from swimming at a popular public sports centre - because they are not Muslims.

The man, known only as David T, and his 10-year-old son were stopped from going into the pool at Clissold Leisure Centre in Stoke Newington, east London.

Last night embarrassed management at the complex said staff were wrong to turn customers away from the designated 'men-only modesty session' on Sunday morning.

The council says the special early-morning get-togethers are aimed at community groups who have strict rules on segregation.

But the dad and his lad were prevented from swimming when they turned up at 9am on Sunday.

David T said: "I arrived at the pool to discover that they were holding what staff described to me as 'Muslim men-only swimming'.

"I asked whether my son and I could go as we were both male. I was told that the session was for Muslims only and that we could not be admitted.

"I asked to speak to the duty manager, who confirmed that this was the case."

He added: "I asked what would happen if I turned up and insisted I was Muslim.

"The manager suggested that they might ask the Muslims swimming if they minded my son and I swimming with them.

"If they didn't object, we might be allowed in."

The men-only modesty swimming sessions take place every Sunday from 8am to 9.30am.

Two websites have been advertising the sessions for Muslim men only.

But a leisure centre spokesman said staff were out of order to refuse people entry for being non-Muslim.

He said: "The member of staff the user spoke with at the time was mistaken when referring to the session as Muslim only.

"The men's modesty session is not a private hire and is, therefore, open to the public. Muslim men and others can attend.

"Staff cannot ask your religion on entrance and you won't be refused entry if you don't appear to be Muslim."

A spokesman for Hackney Council said: "None of Hackney's leisure centres have religiously segregated swimming sessions in their public timetables.

"In common with most public swimming facilities, there are single sex sessions, and this session was men only.

"The member of staff in this situation made a mistake... Hackney Council would wish to apologise to any member of the public who was given incorrect information."

yeah been caught and now back tracking BIG TIME :angry2:

Moving in and taking over. What part of free and equal freedom do these "loose wires" not understand. They just keep trying to push the wrong button.

Just sounds to me like a couple of employees who misunderstood the guidelines of the swim session.

No reason to read into it beyond that and go blaming muslims...

I have to agree with you there. How can you blame the entire nation of Islam for something a guy in a public pool said(whom probably isnt even Muslim).

He he. And people trip out about America and our "bible belt"...

Sorry, if ANYONE was not allowed into a pool in America because they weren't Christian (in other words the roles reversed to this case) people would be FREAKING out about how jacked up Christianity is. But no, it's Muslims, so we hear a bunch of "Ohh, it was just a misunderstanding" crap.

I feel sorry for Europe and the flood of Muslim/Islamic trash that is RUINING your entire continent. I find it offensive and hypocritical.

You've never misunderstood a new policy at work and given a customer the wrong info on accident?

Maybe it wasn't a mistake, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. There's a lot of discrimination going on in the world. They seem to be correcting the error and if it happens again, then I'd see reason to be concerned. This is incredibly minor compared to a lot of other things going on. That's not to say it should be let go, they're doing something to correct what happened.

Would you prefer I sit here and get worked up over this?

Had to be Hackney council didn't it. Pretty soon they'll have there own border patrols...''sorry sir you can't come in here, you're to anglo saxon''

A few years back I watched a documentary about radical muslims in this country. They interviewed one guy who openly stated that the muslims here won't be happy until there is an islamic flag flying over no. 10. & i'm begining to accept that it'll happen within my lifetime.

Welcome to the future my friends.

Just the mere fact that they had the NERVE to try means your already compromised. It's a shame, and a sham. Assimilate, or GO AWAY. Laws of the land are what you follow. If you don't like Sharia Law, don't go to Iran. If you don't like Canadian law, DON'T go to Canada! Simple enough, right?

I am starting to become more aware of the issues in the UK specifically. Trust me CL, I do not wish to brush aside your concerns about what is happening in your country. They are certainly very legitimate.

At the same time, I understand that the media likes to provoke issues in things where it really was just a stupid misunderstanding. I try to keep this all in mind when reading articles like this. This incident seems to me like it could have easily been a misunderstanding. However, that can be very difficult to discern, especially when viewed out of context.

Just providing an outsiders viewpoint of this specific incident.

Even if it was a mistake its quite shocking and a sad indictmnent of UK 2008 that the staff members thought it was quite reasonable to refuse non-muslims from a public pool.

Can you imagine if a muslim family turned up at your local pool to be told, sorry folks no muslims in here today.

The character borat is not a jew.

No, but the acter - Sacha Baron Cohen - is a Jew.

Which was what Chemical stated.

Although Borat has never mentioned his religion. Although islam is the largest religion in kazackstan by 49% or so.

I dont actually blame the Muslims, or any of the ethnic minorities, who enjoy this positive discrimination (naturally they are gonna take what they can push for), I firmly blame the British public for voting in, and backing government policies which allow this type of crazy situation, I also blame the British public, for being influenced by the guardian & their crap high moral stance!

And lastly I blame the British public, for being a bunch of lazy wasters, who are happy to moan behind closed doors.......For this i can only admire the solidarity of the French......

The people of France demand that their government follow the wishes of the people...........The French have an overriding wish to preserve their way of life, and no one is going to mess with it, not even the government...

what else can i say
