So I came across this the other day, I guess many people will have already known about it, or maybe it's even been posted here, but it's interesting.

Basically, copy and paste a few paragraphs from something you've written into the text field and hit analyze, and it evaluates your writing and spits out a bunch of statistics on some typical psychology criteria like Openness, Empathy, Creativity, etc.

Presumably this is done simply by your word choice, so do be aware that the topic likely will have a significant bearing on the results - ie, pasting a long, intellectual bit of "thinking aloud" about the complexities of life and your own experiences is likely to give you a dramatically different result than posting a block about why Knuckles the Echidna is your favorite Sonic character.

I did notice, though, when I posted two fairly different but still related "articles" of mine on the same topic, many of the values in the majority of properties remained fairly consistent, while a handful changed wildly. It does list me repeatedly as 94% Cautious and 98% Melancholy (I have clinical depression so I guess it shows through, if this is accurate, which is interesting), and says I'm "100%" creative - I don't know what practical meaning a number has in something like that, but it's interesting. It also gives you a few sentence general summary of its findings and a visual diagram representing the text values it came up with.

So if you are interested, try it out, maybe post your results here and compare and discuss. Kind of an interesting time waster. For thoroughness, if you are someone who is concerned about people "stealing" your ideas or finding out things about you, do remember that ANYTHING you post ANYWHERE on the internet is theoretically read and stored and could even be hacked even from the assumedly secure/objective site (like an IBM demo), so maybe don't post the entirely of your tween vampire romance novel or your own last five year journal of coming to terms with the fact that Justin Bieber really helped you become the adult you are today...

I don't necessarily agree with a lot of the things below that Watson determined, but a person can't really just be reduced to a pile of labels and numbers, and even two samples of writing on different topics on different days could yield vastly differing analysis, so I'd recommend you do like me and take it with a grain of salt. =)

I pasted in one of my silly Greeting to New Posters entries:

You are just in time to select your entrant in this years "UM Annual Aardvark Race And Beauty Contest"... So make sure you go by the holding pens and

select the fastest (or prettiest) Aardvark! This years race course is from just in front of the SE Drawbridge (over in the old Zombie Marshaling yard), three times around the

infamous Purple Tower of the Inquisitor Academy, and then straight across the (old) lava flows, down the Endless stairs of Misery (The old escalator that use to lead into the dungeons)

through the maze of tunnels in the Upper Dungeons, past the new Kardashian wing of the house of horrors, out of the dungeons and across the Pixie Parade Grounds..

Of course the Aardvarks are too small to be ridden by us, so you will first have to claim your badger rider and strap it onto the back of your Aardvark...

Also, there are still three slots available for judges in the Beauty Pageant... So if you have any experience in judging pageants (or Aardvarks) please feel free to submit your resume)...

Following the race and the Beauty Pageant, we will have the annual Badger Round Up (to put those critters back in their pens)... So wear chain mail...

And here is what it gave me:

You consider helping others to guide a large part of what you do: you think it is important to take care of the people around you. You are relatively unconcerned with tradition: you care more about making your own path than following what others have done.

Rational?... Me?...

I'm trying this three times: once writing casually, once writing formally, and once putting the two together. Let's see what happens.

Casual test

Let's see how this thing works. If it works how it's supposed to, then it should give me a pretty good interpretation of myself. If it's just a bunch of free online psychoanalysis, like I think it is, then it should give me a bunch of percentages, without really explaining what they mean. Plus, the little "interpretation" at the bottom with the summary and visualization look nice, but I suspect they will be fairly generic and not tell me anything I either didn't know couldn't have gotten from asking somebody who knows me well enough. Either way, it's a good way to kill a few minutes. I'm going to try this again, with the same sense, but make it more formal. Then I'll try the two of them together.

You are a bit compulsive, somewhat shortsighted and somber.

You are fiery: you have a fiery temper, especially when things do not go your way. You are melancholy: you think quite often about the things you are unhappy about. And you are intermittent: you have a hard time sticking with difficult tasks for a long period of time.

Your choices are driven by a desire for prestige.

You consider achieving success to guide a large part of what you do: you seek out opportunities to improve yourself and demonstrate that you are a capable person. You are relatively unconcerned with tradition: you care more about making your own path than following what others have done.

Formal test

This is an attempt to test how well this program functions. If it functions as advertised, it will respond with an accurate analysis of my mental state. I suspect, however, that it is simply a gimmick, and as such will not supply an explanation for its results. Additionally, the summary and visualization presented will most likely not contain any useful or specific information. Whether it represents an accurate interpretation of my psychology or not, it could be entertaining to see what a computer program thinks of me. I have already made this attempt using less formal language, but retaining the meaning of this passage. After this, I will combine them into a single paragraph.

You are skeptical, inner-directed and excitable.

You are self-conscious: you are sensitive about what others might be thinking about you. You are independent: you have a strong desire to have time to yourself. And you are proud: you hold yourself in high regard, satisfied with who you are.

To analyze my analysis, I am driven by a desire for prestige. I'm unconcerned about tradition, and care more about making my own path in life. I am success-oriented, and look for opportunities to improve myself. In my personal life, I think a lot about what I am unhappy about, and have a hard time staying with tasks. In my professional life, I am concerned about what other people think about me.

Overall, it's a pretty good analysis.
