Rhino species extinct

Recommended Posts

Another one of Earth’s majestic creatures has bitten the dust forever.

The western black rhino, a subspecies of the black rhino, was declared extinct last month by The International Union for Conservation of Nature, as no sightings of the creature have been reported since 2006. The blame rests entirely on us humans, or more specifically, on the greed of humans.

The western black rhino, which lived for millennia in the southern part of Africa, was killed off by the ceaseless efforts of poachers. According to a May 7, 2013 article in Earth First News, the horns are desired because of a superstition in some countries that they can cure or prevent everything from cancer to a headache after a night of too much drinking.

"Traditional Chinese medicine has long used rhino horn to treat high fevers and convulsions, as well as clearing out toxins from alcohol consumption."

China again.

Not just China but other backward countries stunted by superstitions. In Vietnam, a rumour that rhino horn cured a politican's cancer led to their extinction in that country.

Vietnamese will pay $300,000 per rhino horn for it's miraculous cancer curing properties. Oh yeah, it also cures hangovers. The ravenous craving has led to horns being stolen out of museums.

This is what happens when thousands of superstitious people all of a sudden have access to amazing wealth. Thanks Walmart!

Just stop buying cheap Asian products, just stop it.

It is thought

that some of the rangers at national

parks charged with protecting the

animals were receiving handouts in

exchange for allowing poachers

access to the rhinos.

no sightings of the

creature have been reported since

2006.

.

let me see if i've got this right-

there have been no sightings for seven years.

rangers were being paid to protect rhino's that haven't been seen for seven years.

plus getting paid backhanders from poachers who wanted to hunt an animal that hasn't been seen for seven years.

wonder if there's any of these rangers jobs going?

I can sit in africa all day long and get paid twice to look after non-existent animals!

nice work if you can get it I suppose.....

Now whatever will they do for their hang over?

Yeah, I'm surprised that those types of Rhinos were not better protected, or some sent to another country.

But with so much being paid for a horn, I guess it shouldn't really surprise me.

The greed of man to the destruction of a species. Both sick and sad.

Well, since those moron rangers protecting them have nothing more to protect, I guess they are out of work.

this is beyond disgusting.

and agree with Red, stop buying Chinese and all Asian products! You can find Made in the USA now, just look on Etsy and in stores. :)

I hope a few of them are out "there" somewhere, safe from poachers. If anyone knows of their existence, I hope that person or persons can keep a secret. It makes me so angry that greed and idiotic beliefs have wiped yet another creature off the face of the planet.

Is the animal extinct or only extinct in the wild? Rhinos are popular zoo animals and it is quite possible that there are some living outside of Africa in zoos. A subspecies of lion thought extinct was found in zoos a decade or so ago.

There are people Ranching black rhinos in South Africa. You can even go there and legally shoot one when they are harvesting the horns.

http://www.care2.com...t-poaching.html

These Western Black Rhinos apparently were the furthest north of the subspecies.

Their extinction is a sad thing.

Apparently there are other black rhino sub-species that are just about as bad off.

http://en.wikipedia....lack_rhinoceros

Chobe black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis chobiensis) – A local subspecies restricted to the Chobe Valley in southeastern Angola, Namibia (Caprivi Strip) and northern Botswana. Nearly extinct, possibly only one surviving specimen in Botswana.
Uganda black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis ladoensis) – Former distribution from South Sudan, across Uganda into western Kenya and southwesternmost Ethiopia. Black rhinos are considered extinct across most of this area and its conservational status is unclear. Probably surviving in Kenyan reserves.

Wiki is not the best source... but...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Western_black_rhinoceros

The western black rhinoceros was heavily hunted in the beginning of the 20th century, but the population rose in the 1930s after preservation actions were taken. As protection efforts declined over the years so did the number of western black rhinos. By 1980 the population was in the hundreds. No animals are known to be held in captivity, however it was believed in 1988 that around 20-30 were being kept for breeding purposes.[7] Poaching continued and by 2000 only an estimated 10 survived. In 2001, this number dwindled to only five.[8] While it was believed that around thirty still existed in 2004, this was later found to be based upon falsified data.[8] In early 2006 an intensive survey of northern Cameroon (the last remaining habitat of the species) found none, but efforts to locate any surviving individuals continued.[9] It is believed that the last western black rhino was killed in 2011.[2] A large part of what is believed to have driven them to the brink of extinction was the fact that poaching was so widespread, and the punishment and efforts behind stopping it were lackluster at best, as those actually caught poaching were never even sentenced.[2] On November 10, 2011, the subspecies was declared extinct by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.[1]

Other species of rhino are also at risk of extinction. The Javan rhino, which lives throughout Southeast Asia, is the most threatened of the remaining rhino species. According to the World Wildlife Fund, Vietnam’s very last Javan rhino was poached in 2010.

There was a thread about the Javan Rhino too -

Proving once again that we cannot rely on governments to successfully deal with poachers. Heavy pressure must come from civil society that forces governments to act, or extinction of large species will continue at the hands of man. How many more species must go extinct before we can begin to like this message?

Someone should probably invent a process to grow a simulated rhino horm on the back of a rat or some such.... It is just specialized tissue like a hoof, or fingernail. Maybe the "powered horn" can be simulated?

The best idea would be to have watch towers or at least have a armed team following a group of Rhinos at a distance of course

Why doesn't someone spread the word that Poachers ears are good medicine for curing almost anything, when dried and ground up and put into a curry.

But...its the civil society that demands rhino horns to turn into medicine, or viagra, or whatever nonsense they think it does...

Would cloning be acceptable in this case since its such a recent extinction or would this too be classified as playing God?

BTW I hate the term playing God... those who use it still tend to go to the doctor to fix ailments which I believe falls into the same category as "playing God" without prejudice. If that is your stance then Gods will also cause your illness.

If this details the conversation ill happily start a new thread to discuss this topic.
