Plans for new nuclear power stations in the UK have suffered a setback as Chinese financial backing for two new reactors has failed to materialise, and a bid by French nuclear group Areva has not been submitted.

In March, German utilities E.ON and RWE scrapped plans to build two new reactors at Wylfa in Wales and Oldbury in Gloucestershire, inviting bids for the project, called Horizon Nuclear Power, with a deadline last Friday.

On Wednesday, French nuclear engineering group Areva told the Guardian that it had dropped its interest – in partnership with the China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group – in bidding for Horizon. "Areva and CGNPC have suspended their interest in the planned sale of Horizon Nuclear Power and did not submit a bid," an Areva spokeswoman said, adding that the company was still committed to new nuclear in the UK through other avenues.

Its not luddite to weight the risks against the cost/benefit and find Nuclear to be to dangerous/costly. Its called making an evidence based decision.

Support for nuclear is always based on politics rather than sound reason.

Q, this links with your other post of EU nuclear power. - its no setback, new nuclear plants will be built. there is no question about it. just think of all the CO2 it will save, never mind about the nuclear waste. once we invent a fail safe method of entering space we'll dump the lot out there. everyones a winner. meanwhile in the fatherland they'll be praying for wind.

I suspect that when you look at the underlying economics your fantasy scenario will be found wanting. Two nuclear projects have collapsed in the last week in the UK alone, because they couldn't find financial backing.

we need power stations. they aint going to be renewable sources, they'll be conventional, with the odds on nuclear either way, we will be building new power stations of that there is no doubt. - now choose your poison.

It would be far cheaper for the Government to tell everyone to buy a few decent wooly jumpers. Cheaper for the Government who doesnt have to built new nuclear plants and cheaper for the public who have reduced electricity bills.

Primark £5 a jumper.

Alternative energies adopted with enough vigour and enough range and scope will represent the future. The piece meal approach been taken now will mean that they will not achieve anything like their overall potential in the near future. The amount of research money dedicated to off shore tidal is tiny compared to that applied to Fission - and that is why the progress is painfully slow. However if the effort is made, off shore tidal alone could supply all the electrical energy Britain would ever need.

Nuclear is a distraction with a very distinct window of viability which means at best it will become uneconomical (more so than it is now) in a little over 40yrs.
