Bogeyman Posted May 20, 2005 #1 Share Posted May 20, 2005 I watched Signs for the 2nd time the other night.......have to say it's better 2nd time round. BUT in the part where they're showing all the ships hovering over the cities it made me think...we all say bring it on ,but it would be pretty scary having these things just hovering there....If push really came to shove it's easy to see how they would cause mass panic.......even if we had been told they were friendly i still think theyd get a hostile reaction in a lot of places
zandore Posted May 20, 2005 #2 Share Posted May 20, 2005 What we (as humans) do not understand has a tendency to try to destroy. Yes I think in places some idiot would try to do something stupid but for the most part I think it would be peaceful.
*MoG* Posted May 20, 2005 #3 Share Posted May 20, 2005 I know I would panic - along with pretty much everyone else that I know. Even if the aliens said they were here for peace - I wouldn't believe them - I would be just waiting for them to exterminate us all - any culture that is advanced enough to travel through the galaxy is more than capable of total world domination
aquatus1 Posted May 20, 2005 #4 Share Posted May 20, 2005 Unfortunately, it is common for humans to respond to an unexpected show of strength with fear, not reason. This is not to say that I believe we would launch into conflict, as I believe the average American's faith in their government would overcome that instinctive urge, however there is no doubt in my mind that, regardless of how we actually act, there would be an underlying edge of fear for a considerable amount of time. DJ_Quinn Posted May 20, 2005 #5 Share Posted May 20, 2005 People have always been afraid of what they don't understand. In the sort of scenareo in the movie, people would freak out. I'm sure I would be very nervous and frightened until I sprayed one with water.
Method Posted May 20, 2005 #6 Share Posted May 20, 2005 It would be mass hysteria, something we would not need if push comes to shove.
Super Pancake Posted May 20, 2005 #7 Share Posted May 20, 2005 One question needs to be asked about signs What would the Aliens do if it started to rain? I will be the first one to launch an attack, who those Reptiles think they are just coming up into our planet uninvited like that. O.K. jokes aside, If aliens just showed up, I don't know first I would put my bong down, alright now I'm serious, I agree with most of you guys this show of superiority would make me nervous and skeptical if they said they came in peace, all I can do is hope china does not launch a missile at the thing. Amalgamut Posted May 20, 2005 #9 Share Posted May 20, 2005 I don't think the aircraft their use will be near as big as in the movies (like Independance Day, or Signs.) I think it will manly consist of smaller, to mid-size ships in various shapes and sizes. But what the hell do I know?
PadawanOsswe Posted May 20, 2005 #10 Share Posted May 20, 2005 (edited) this is why we must prepare our defense's just in case of invasion (knock on wood) but yes, Mass Panic is the number 1 reason why the governments wont admit anything. Space Commander Travis Posted May 20, 2005 #12 Share Posted May 20, 2005 There's a theory that aliens deliberately don't reveal themelsves to large numbers of people at a time, that they single out people who they think are receptive to them and wouldn't freak out, like the old contactees of the 50's. So rather than singling out people for some bad reason (get that probe ready!), they choose people they think they'd get on with. that's why they don't reveal themslves openly to politicians, as who could get on well with them! Proper stimulus and humans will either take of in flight (Run away) or do something stupid like stand and fight. Sorry MOG I was just using you as an example. Yes I think in places some idiot would try to do something stupid but for the most part I think it would be peaceful. 631172[/snapback] add that while the rational mind assumes another rational mind will arrive at the same conclusion, the irrational mind is completely reactionary. the irrational minds of many would think (as happens with everything) from an athropomorphic point of view, and thus read all of those nasty human qualities into the arriving species a priori, thus predetermining the outcome of contact. That is a good reason why any rational beings have yet to make a mass greeting ->they see the idiocy of the primative human mind.
ECC Posted May 20, 2005 #17 Share Posted May 20, 2005 They need to slowly approach within months, maybe a year or two. They need to slowly get closer and have more sightings and crop circles (if they are the cause of those) and then do some kind of landing stuff. The Caspian Hare Posted May 20, 2005 #18 Share Posted May 20, 2005 O.K. jokes aside, If aliens just showed up, I don't know first I would put my bong down, If the world is about to end in an alien invasion, that would be the time for you to smoke more, not less. I think it's reasonable to assume that any species capable of dominating the planet is going to be fairly aggressive. Natural selection should work in other ecosystems besides ours. I'm pretty certain they'll have had their share of wars. If you like to read, a good SF novel about first contact with aliens and the problems it poses is The Mote in God's Eye by Larry Niven. nativechick1989 Posted May 21, 2005 #19 Share Posted May 21, 2005 Well for sure I would be one of the first to flip out and panic. earthchick Posted May 21, 2005 #20 Share Posted May 21, 2005 Given the fact that there seems to be evidence of alien visits going back hundreds of years, don't you think that if they really wanted to invade Earth they would have done so by now? However...every thousand is made up of hundreds....is it not?....so it amounts to the same thing. Edited May 21, 2005 by earthchick
