I have no idea why, but thats the way it was at LGB back in the 90s. FYI (I can believe I just said that) A helicopter, especially the R-22 took some focus to master. As an instructor, I have seen grown men shead tears,... Seriously.

Helicopters are a totally different bird, and were, because of their two handed control mechanisms, part of required training for all CDRs and LM pilots. Gene Cernan dumped one in the Banana River on 1-23-71. Got through it without losing his life, or his Apollo 17 command!
Yea, you've gotta push a fixed wing fast enough to make it generate enough lift to fly. A roatary wing, well...you know, it spins and gwenerates lift...no one ever has to push a chopper to make it fly!
